Wien Energie is planning 70 new solar projects: green electricity for everyone!
Wien Energie has taken big steps into the future and celebrated a significant milestone in the expansion of its photovoltaic systems on July 20, 2025. From this day on, the company operates an impressive 500 photovoltaic systems in Austria, with an impressive total output of around 200 megawatts. To put the whole thing into perspective: every week a new area the size of a football field is created to rely on the sun's energy. This is no coincidence - almost half of the total output was achieved in the last two and a half years, which impressively underlines the dynamism and enthusiasm of Wien Energie.
As the largest regional energy service provider in Austria, Wien Energie is committed to promoting innovative technologies and broad areas of application. This includes the use of double-sided modules and organic lightweight construction elements. The market office building at Karmelitermarkt is also home to Europe's first energy self-sufficient market. Since 2019, a photovoltaic system on the Haus des Meeres has even been supplying the animal areas with green electricity. Wien Energie plans to install more than 70 new systems in 2025 – a clear commitment to the energy transition.
Vienna on the way to climate neutrality
But it's not just Wien Energie that has big plans. The city pursues a comprehensive and forward-looking energy policy that combines security of supply, climate protection and social justice. The phase-out of fossil fuels by 2040 is at the heart of this strategy. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, measures are being taken in various areas. For example, all Viennese should be able to live a good life with equal opportunities. An important lever here is the heat transition in the building sector, which contributes significantly to achieving climate neutrality.
The energy supply of the future will include multifunctional, networked buildings, with the expansion of renewable forms of energy and the abandonment of fossil fuels being strongly promoted. With a goal of a total of 800 megawatt peaks by 2030, the expansion of photovoltaics is being pushed further. The legal framework has also improved in order to minimize bureaucratic hurdles for photovoltaic systems. In order to give a boost to the energy transition, the “Out of Gas” program will be continued, which replaces fossil fuel-powered heating systems.
Innovations and pilot projects
Wien Energie is playing a pioneering role, particularly with its focus on promoting innovation for start-ups in the energy sector. 100 new pilot projects in commercial buildings are also planned. In order to support the switch to renewable energies, comprehensive consulting services will continue to be provided. A strategy for sustainable building cooling and a long-term funding strategy are also on the agenda.
The importance of photovoltaics for the energy transition is reflected not least in the technology itself. Most photovoltaic systems use monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar cells that generate electricity using sunlight. The direct current generated is converted into alternating current via an inverter, which makes integration into the power grid easier. Thanks to constant technological advances, the cost of solar systems has fallen significantly in recent years, making this energy source not only environmentally friendly but also financially attractive.
With all of these measures and investments, Vienna is not only striving for a successful energy transition, but also wants to shine as a European metropolis of renewable energy production. The path is clear: sustainability and climate protection go hand in hand with the quality of life of citizens, and the future looks promising.
