Liesing looks ahead: wishes and cycle paths for a better 2026!
The countdown for the coming year 2026 has already begun in Liesing and the residents have already expressed their hopes and wishes. The focus is particularly on the issues of the environment, transport and community.
In conversations with four Liesingers, their individual wishes became clear. The young student Ennie hopes for quiet New Year's Eve days in which firecrackers and fireworks are at a minimum in order to reduce the stress on animals. She is also calling for the expansion of cycle paths, especially the new cycle path over Atzgersdorfer Platz, which will make it easier for her to get to school. The need for a safe route to school is undisputed, especially at a time when mobility plays a central role.
Cycle path expansion in Liesing
The real highlight in Liesing, however, is the cycle path offensive, which is currently in full swing. As the City of Vienna announces, the district will be blessed with over 9 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure by 2026. Liesing is the fourth district focus here after Donaustadt, Favoriten and Floridsdorf. Over 30 projects are being implemented to close important gaps in the cycling network and create new connections that make cycling more convenient. Among other things, a new two-way cycle path will be built on Wohnparkstrasse, which will close a central gap and be connected to the Liesingbach cycle path.
Overall, the initiative is also being lovingly expanded: at least 60 new trees will be planted and 1,000 square meters of new green space will be created. This is in line with the wishes of Katharina, a florist, who would like more care for the Liesingen green spaces. She also has concerns about flooding potentially caused by beaver dens along bike paths and meadows after rainfall.
Strengthen community and local supplies
But it's not just the cycle paths that are moving in Liesing. Christoph Eckl, a local bookseller, attaches importance to the village character of the district and calls for greater awareness of the local book trade. In his opinion, it is important to strengthen local jobs in order to ensure a liveable community. This feeling of neighborliness and cohesion is what many residents value - despite the district's continued growth.
Another issue that concerns the Liesingers is the parking situation, which Otto Wininger, pensioner and another voter, is critical of. He reports a “rip-off” in the parking lot of a supermarket, where he received a payment request after parking for a long time. This experience has led him to avoid the shops in the area.
It turns out that a lot is happening in Liesing: from the cycle path offensive to the importance of local trade to the wishes for a clean environment. The challenges are clear, but the residents are ready to play an active role in keeping Liesing liveable and lively in the future. A look at developments over the next few months will show which of these wishes will come true.
