Bank break-in in Liesing: Perpetrators flee with stolen e-scooter!
On the night of June 7, 2025, there was a suspected break-in in a bank foyer in Vienna-Liesing. At around 10 p.m., previously unknown perpetrators broke into a coin counting machine and triggered an alarm. How 5min.at Reportedly, the perpetrators managed to escape on an e-scooter that was recently stolen. The police were able to arrest a 15-year-old Austrian during an immediate manhunt, while another suspect is still on the run.
The stolen e-scooter has since been recovered. Investigations are now being carried out by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South Branch. The police are doing everything they can to catch the second perpetrator as quickly as possible and to clarify the background to the break-in.
Theft and e-scooters: A current problem
Interestingly, a survey by the Road Safety Board (KFV) shows that around one in ten people who own an e-bike or e-scooter have already been the victim of theft. The Federal Criminal Police Office and the KFV therefore recommend that vehicles be well secured and parked in a protected manner, especially in private areas. There are now around 900,000 e-bikes and 210,000 e-scooters in Austria.
However, the statistics on bicycle theft are not entirely encouraging. While the number of reported bicycle thefts has fallen by almost 28% since 2008, 17,595 cases were still registered in 2021. What is particularly alarming is that over 50% of crime scenes are not publicly accessible, which shows that the perpetrators are specifically looking for valuable and easily salvageable objects.
Prevention and insurance
So it's high time to think about your own protection. Owners of high-quality e-bikes or bicycles should seriously consider special bicycle or e-bike insurance, as in GDV.de is to be read. These insurance policies not only provide protection against theft, but also cover a variety of risks that standard home contents insurance does not cover.
Here are some tips for theft prevention:
- Hochwertige Schlösser nutzen und das Rad an einem festen Objekt sichern.
- Akkus und abnehmbare Teile sollten immer mitgenommen werden.
- Das Abstellen im öffentlichen Raum sollte auf sichere Plätze beschränkt werden.
- GPS-Tracker zur Diebstahlsicherung einsetzen.
The current situation of thefts - especially with regard to e-scooters - is cause for concern. The steady increase in usage also reflects the increase in break-ins and thefts. Against this background, we can only hope that the investigation in Liesing will quickly lead to success and that future crimes can be prevented.
