30 years of Integrationshaus: An anniversary full of hope and music!
This is possible in Vienna Integration house has been providing refugees with a new home since 1995 and not only offers accommodation, but also a variety of support services. The ambitious project has been able to report numerous stories and successes over the course of three decades. One of the first residents, Ðaneta Memišević, fled Sarajevo with her three children and found an important contact point in the integration house.
Memisević arrived in Vienna in April 1994, where she initially received refugee status. After being housed in various homes, the family found their place in the integration house on Engerthstrasse in June 1995. Here she experienced the necessary privacy and received support with official matters in her own language. She contributed these important aspects significantly to her later involvement.
From hardship to success story
As a trained elementary school teacher, Memišević soon took over afternoon care in the integration house. She took the opportunity to intensively learn German and sign language and was not only able to gain a foothold in her new home country, but was also able to move into her own apartment in 1997 and find a job at an association for the deaf. Today she is also a board member of the Integration House and works to ensure that other people in similar situations also have a chance.
The integration house itself has developed into an important place for refugees over the last 30 years. It offers a total of 40 residential units that can accommodate around 110 people. A dedicated team of 160 employees and over 50 volunteers ensure the comprehensive support provided here. In addition to accommodation and meals, the facility also provides psychosocial support, counseling and various educational projects.
Anniversary celebrations
In 2023, the Integrationshaus will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The anniversary will be celebrated with a festive open-air concert on June 25th in the arena. The artists who will perform include Ernst Molden, Tini Kainrath and Christoph Seiler. With ticket prices starting at 49.50 euros, this event is likely to be a highlight for visitors and the entire community.
The comprehensive offerings of the Integration House are not only important for the residents, but also for the entire society of Vienna. It makes an important contribution to the integration and understanding of different cultures living together. Psychosocial support for refugees is an essential part of processing their experiences and creating perspectives for the future.
