Vienna clinics: massive construction delays despite modernization plans!
Sleepless nights and pressing pressure to save money – the WIGEV clinics in Vienna are faced with new challenges. A comprehensive modernization and expansion program until 2040 could now be delayed, as meinkreis.at reported. Despite all the adversities, it remains clear that all clinic locations will remain in place and health care will therefore continue to be secured.
The plans for new buildings in the Ottakring and Hietzing districts as well as for the parent-child center at the AKH, the Institute for Laboratory Technology in the Favoriten Clinic and the central emergency room in the Donaustadt Clinic are still on track. Even though many improvements are a long time coming, many projects remain in the pipeline.
Central emergency room and renovation projects
The central emergency room at the Donaustadt Clinic is scheduled to be completed by 2028. Other innovations include the new construction of the food service, also by 2028, and the renovation of the operating center, which is currently being planned. While the entrance area at the Landstrasse Clinic is being expanded, the renovation work on the wards unfortunately has to be postponed. Construction is not expected to start there until after 2030.
For the Favoriten Clinic, the Institute for Laboratory Technology remains on track, while the renovation of the ARIO Oncology Center is scheduled to take place by 2028 and the new child and adolescent psychiatry facility will be built by 2029. However, the new construction of the forensics department will be postponed further. A proposal for a “minor surgery center” is also being considered, which could be possible by 2028, although it is not part of the current construction program.
Politics and responsibility
The discussion about the construction projects is also politically heated. The ÖVP criticizes the city government's communication and calls for a clear timetable for the modernizations. "There's something there! Citizens have a right to transparency," is the critics' motto. The responsibility for Austrian healthcare is not only in the hands of the city, but is also borne by the federal government, the states and social security. A common framework plan, the Austrian Structural Health Plan (ÖSG), was developed to ensure and further develop the quality and security of care in the clinics.
The ÖSG stipulates that the various care regions in Vienna, which include the Floridsdorf, Donaustadt, Landstrasse, Favoriten, Ottakring and Hietzing clinics, take specific planning statements and quality criteria into account. This approach aims to create a balanced healthcare system that benefits all citizens in Vienna bauprojekte.gesundheitsverbund.at is presented.
In addition, the Ministry of Social Affairs ensures that health care will continue to meet increasing demands in the future. Its goal is to achieve the same standards of care throughout Austria and to guarantee comprehensive basic medical care that takes all Austrian care regions into account, as stated in this guiding principle socialminister.gv.at is explained.
It remains exciting to see how developments in the Vienna health sector will continue to unfold. The hope for gradual improvements remains, despite the current delays. One thing is clear: the people of Vienna deserve modern and well-thought-out healthcare!
