U4 and S-Bahn back in operation: Vienna is preparing for new construction sites!
The transport network in Vienna has undergone some significant changes in recent months, and since the beginning of September 2023, the U4 and the rapid transit connection between Vienna-Praterstern and Vienna-Floridsdorf have been back in operation. After careful maintenance work that led to a two-month closure, the U4 now runs continuously between Vienna-Hütteldorf and Vienna-Heiligenstadt. Loud Cosmo The main route of the S-Bahn, which has been an important connection for Vienna and the surrounding area for over 60 years, has also been restored.
The necessary work on the U4 included a fundamental renovation of the tunnel ceiling, which is over 120 years old. During the two months in which the section between Vienna-Schottenring and Vienna-Friedensbrücke was closed, Wiener Linien took replacement measures. For example, the E4 tram line took over many important connections, and the D line was rerouted between Nußdorf and Schottenring. Two bus lines were also set up for the S-Bahn closure: the SV900 line, which served all stops, and the SV905 direct bus for quicker connections.
Planned construction measures and changes
In the coming period, there will be further construction work in Vienna that will affect public transport. Partial closures of the U4 between Wien-Schwedenplatz and Wien-Landstrasse are planned for 2026 in order to create new track connections. From September 2026, the area between Vienna-Praterstern and Vienna Central Station will also be taken out of operation for 14 months, as bridges and viaducts here need to be renovated. A final goal of the infrastructure project is for the work to be completed by the timetable change in December 2027.
Wiener Linien has continued to focus on modernizing its network, particularly in the area of the U4 and track renewals. While the work took place from June 28th to September 1st, the U4 was active between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke. In addition, track work was carried out in inner-city areas such as the Kärntner Ring and Universitätsring until the end of August. Some of the work on the tracks is carried out during ongoing operations, which requires additional courage and flexibility from the passengers.
An interesting detail: The intervals of the U2 and U4 were increased during the summer holidays - the U4 now runs every 5 minutes. In order to reduce the pressure on traffic, replacement lines such as the E4 tram (from Nußdorf to Schottenring) and the 6E bus line (Westbahnhof-Eichenstraße) offer additional capacity.
A look into the future
The network expansion in Vienna is progressing quickly, and new tram lines such as the 12 and 27 will also be put into operation in the fall. At the same time, construction work to extend line 18 to the stadium will begin in June, which should further improve the connection. The next few years promise a lot of movement in public transport, and as always, Wiener Linien has a good knack for mastering the challenges of city residents.
