The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is facing an exciting time with an exciting exhibition program for 2025 and 2026. From retrospectives of well-known painters to fascinating thematic collections - the coming months promise many highlights for art lovers. The retrospective on the Flemish painter Michaelina Wautier is considered a remarkable presentation by art experts. The exhibition is on view until February 22, 2026 and shows works that include history paintings, portraits and also the complete series “The Five Senses”. Wautier is not only considered one of the most outstanding painters of the 17th century, but also an artistic discovery that should not be missed.
Further highlights of the program
Another highlight is the exhibition “Canaletto & Bellotto”, which will take place from March 24th to September 6th, 2026. Around 60 works by Giovanni Antonio Canal and Bernardo Bellotto are presented here, showing Venice, London and Vienna. These city views are not only artistically valuable, but also provide information about the social and political context of the 18th century.
Afterwards, from October 20, 2026, we will continue with “Cleopatra & Rome – Crime Scene Ephesus”. This exhibition addresses the murder of Cleopatra's sister Arsinoë and highlights new interpretations through current research, including international loans that expand the archaeological picture.
From 2026, a new tour of the Neue Hofburg will also be offered under the title “House of Habsburg”. This audio-guided tour will be available in ten languages and takes visitors through the history of the Habsburgs and their impressive collections.
Extraordinary events and exhibitions
In addition, an exciting installation awaits guests in the theater museum: “Klimt. The Naked Truth” will make Gustav Klimt's creative journey tangible from November 2026. This permanent exhibition focuses on Klimt's work “Nuda Veritas” and is supplemented by film and scenographic elements.
Not to be forgotten is the exhibition “Bernini – Painting and Marble”, which runs from December 2nd, 2026 to April 4th, 2027. A newly identified portrait of the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini will captivate visitors.
In addition, the event “A Bite of Art” will start in summer 2026 as part of the “Vienna Bites” theme year. A themed trail on depictions of food and drink in art is offered, and an accompanying gastronomic program in the museum's café gives the enjoyment of art a culinary touch.
Opening times and visitor information
The Art History Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Thursday until 9 p.m. The New Hofburg remains closed on Mondays, while the Theater Museum in the Palais Lobkowitz is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. These are ideal conditions to enjoy the new and exciting exhibitions in peace.
