Parking shortage in Vienna-Josefstadt: Looking for solutions!

Wien-Josefstadt, Österreich - The shortage of parking in Vienna-Josefstadt continues to come to a head and is increasingly creating the residents. Construction sites, closed garages such as the Astoria garage and rising Parkpickerl fees contribute to the tense situation. In the past few weeks, many residents have had difficulty finding a free parking space, even during the summer months. The Astoria garage, which was open for over 89 years, closed in the summer of 2024 due to an illness of the owner, losing 300 important parking spaces. 5min reports that the remaining garage places are often fully booked or with prices of up to 200 euros per month.

The construction sites in Lederergasse and other roadblocks additionally strengthen the situation. FPÖ club chairman Maximilian Krauss is also criticized, which perceives the plans of the city government to increase the Parkpickerl fees as unfair. The closure of the Astoria garage is considered a loss of an important parking space reserve. A holistic traffic concept that takes into account all road users is required to defuse the situation.

the "garage package" as a solution

In order to counter the shortage of parking, a new "garage package" is introduced in Josefstadt. In cooperation with various parking garages operators, this package is to create 185 new parking spaces. District head Martin Fabisch emphasizes the need to better use the space in this densely built -up area. These parking spaces are created at several locations:

  • Stiftgasse 5-9, 7. District: 20 places for permanent parking
  • Universitätsstraße, 9th district: 20 places for permanent parking
  • Otto-Wagner Platz, 9. District: 100 places for night parkers (Mon to Friday: 5 p.m. to 8.30 a.m., Saturday, Sunday, public holidays: full day)
  • Franz Josef Kai 1, 1. District: 15 places for permanent parking
  • Schlesingerplatz, 8. District: 15 places for permanent parking
  • Pfeilgasse 20, 8. District: 5 places for permanent parking
  • Burggasse 85, 7. District: 10 places for permanent parking

The introduction of the garage package will not only improve the existing parking situation, but also optimize the distribution and use of the garage capacities. According to Wolfgang Richter, the costs for the new underground parking spaces from "Wipark" are between 99 and 242 euros. One crucial point is that this offer will only be available for persons registered in Josefstadt.

The citizens are excited to see whether the new parking spaces will actually lead to relaxation of the tense parking situation. District head Fabisch showed a good knack in the development of the garage package, but the question remains: Are these measures sufficient to solve the problem in the long term? As the current developments show, there is definitely something else. MeinDzirk remains for further information on the pulse of the time.
