Vienna in the crisis: Record number of company insolvencies 2025 expected!
A dark picture is emerging for the economy in Vienna: The insolvency statistics of the Alpine Vergurgerverband (AKV) shows an alarming increase in company insolvencies for the first half of 2025. A total of 799 insolvent companies were registered during this period, which means an increase of 5.41 percent compared to the record year 2024. This means that an average of 133 bankruptcies per month come to the city - that's about 30 companies per week. And that's not just a local phenomenon; These figures even exceed the values from the financial crisis of 2007/2008, such as [meinzirk.at] (https://www.meinbezirk.at/wien/c-wirtschaft/wien-droht-firmen-firmen-firmenfrekordjahr year reports.
The financial burdens are also considerable. The overall liabilities of the insolvent companies in Vienna amount to an incredible 5.55 billion euros. The real estate industry is particularly affected, which bears the lion's share of the liabilities at 3.83 billion euros. Interestingly, the ten largest company bankruptcies all come from this sector in the first half of the year. The AKV emphasizes that the 94 insolvent signa companies, 88 procedures were opened at the Vienna Commercial Court. By the end of 2023 there were already a total of 151 bankruptcies in the Signa empire, with 127 of them taking place in Vienna.
A look at the cross -sector numbers
The industries that record most of the bankruptcies are the trade with 179 cases, followed by the construction industry with 151 and the real estate industry with 144. The forecast for the entire year 2025 is worrying: it is expected that up to 1,600 company insolvencies in Vienna will be opened. Taking into account the insolvency dismissals due to a lack of assets, the number could even increase to around 2,800 companies.
Not just the companies suffer. The private bankruptcies also rise. So far, 1,631 procedures have been opened in Vienna, which corresponds to an increase of 7.3 percent compared to the previous year. On average, there are 63 private bankruptcies per week, and the total debt in these procedures amounts to over 207 million euros. The average debt per person is 127,200 euros.
Austria -wide trends
At the national level, the numbers are no less alarming. There were a total of 2,173 company insolvencies in the first half of 2025, which means 3.53 percent compared to the previous year. The AKV estimates that 2025 will be the third record year in a row, with an expected total number of around 4,500 company insolvencies. Interestingly, the overall passiva fell considerably compared to the previous year, from 14.08 billion euros to 7.82 billion euros.
This shows that the uncertainty factors, especially in the insolvency proceedings in the Signa conglomerate, increase, since a large part of the claims are not recognized. The decline in private bankruptcies can be observed in all federal states-with the exception of Vienna, where the numbers increase, as Sn.at
The data on these bankruptcies and corporate registrations are collected in accordance with the legal requirements of statistics Austria. For the recording and evaluation, a variety of legal provisions are necessary that ensure that the data is reliable and serve as the basis for economic decisions, according to [statistics.at] (https://www.statistik.at/statistiken/ industrie-bau-hand-handers-und---unde--und---unde--unde--unde--unde--und-
