Huge rush at the free HPV vaccination day in Vienna!
The Social Hub Wien, Österreich - yesterday, on June 16, 2025, the newly founded HPV youth advisory board in Vienna organized an information and vaccination day with great commitment. Under the motto "FCK HPV", the young people should be motivated to find out about human papilloma viruses (HPV) and their health consequences. The event took place in the "The Social Hub Vienna" and attracted numerous young people who were interested in health.
The HPV youth advisory board, consisting of around ten members between the ages of 17 and 22, has been active since May to promote education and prevention. Sophie Drescher, one of the organizers, underlined how important it is to educate the young population about the risks of HPV, since this is accompanied by the most common sexually transmitted infection with potentially high cancer risks, especially for uterine cancer. Numerous vaccines were reordered on site because the demand was larger than expected and the health lectures on issued were well attended.
HPV and the dangers
HPV comprises more than 200 different types, of which only certain, such as high-risk types 16 and 18, can actually cause cancer. Estimates show that around 6,250 women and 1,600 men in Germany develop HPV-related cancer annually. It is particularly questionable that cervical cancer is caused almost exclusively by HPV, which clearly illustrates the importance of vaccination. In Austria, too, more and more people have to endure medical interventions due to HPV-related cancer preliminary stages, which makes the initiative of the youth advisory board all the more important. Until December 2023, the HPV vaccination for everyone up to the 30th birthday is free of charge, although the first vaccination must be completed by June.
The vaccination: safe and necessary
The HPV vaccination is not only effective, but also classified as safe. According to the WHO, over 270 million vaccine doses were administered worldwide without significant health side effects being known. Common reactions such as pain or redness at the puncture site are mild and temporary. Serious side effects are extremely rare and occur in about 1.7 cases per million vaccinations. The concerns that some Internet forums spread about serious side effects could be conclusively refuted by extensive studies. The Paul-Ehrlich Institute has not been able to see any connection between two deaths from 2007 and the HPV vaccination, which again underlines security.
With these findings and events such as today's action day, the HPV education in Vienna will continue to promote. The future will show how strongly the commitment of the HPV youth advisory board can bear fruit and whether numerous young people will benefit if they choose vaccination. Because the following applies: prevention is the best way to a healthy future.
