New baby elephant at Schönbrunn Zoo delights visitors!
A very special event took place in... Schönbrunn Zoo played: An elephant calf that was born just two and a half months ago is developing splendidly. This little pachyderm is now completely integrated into the herd. Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck is enthusiastic about the positive dynamics within the group.
What is particularly striking is the close relationship with an elephant cow born in 2003, who acts as a patient “aunt”. While the mother enjoys relaxing moments, the calf often frolicks under her belly and plays happily with other members of the herd. The calf's curiosity is obvious; It explores the facility extensively, which shows that it feels comfortable.
A strong increase
The elephant calf weighed just over 100 kilograms when it was born. Two weeks later the scales came in at 195 kilograms. The calf therefore gains around one kilogram per day. It also diligently practices the use of its trunk: it touches its surroundings, explores herd members and is always full of energy. It has also made its first attempts to take up water with its trunk.
It is also important to mention that the calf is still nursing. But it also shows an interest in solid food and is already carrying small branches around. A great development that is supported by the loving commitment of the animal care team. The little elephant has built up a lot of trust in his carers and allows himself to be petted - a crucial prerequisite for smooth medical training in the future.
A look into the future
The calf's father weighs a decent 4.6 tons. It remains exciting to watch how the young animal develops further. Our readers will certainly be happy to be informed about the progress, because the animal inhabitants of Schönbrunn Zoo inspire young and old.
So much happiness and joy of life in a highly valued Vienna zoo shows how important it is to allow animals to thrive in a caring environment and highlights the importance of the zoo to the city of Vienna as a place of learning and joy.
