Ethics in the hospital: Symposium strengthens moral resilience!

The second ethics symposium in the Hietzing Clinic took place on Friday, September 26, 2025 and attracted over 120 participants, including leading experts and employees from all health professions. Under the motto "Moral resilience through ethics competence in the hospital", the Vienna Health Association (WigEV) in cooperation with the Hietzing Clinic and the Institute for Ethics and Law in Medicine (Ierm) appeared in order to put the importance of clinical ethics advice on the spotlight. Ethical action, according to Michael Binder, the medical director of the Wigev, is carried by a community and strengthen moral resilience in the hospital.

An important point in the symposium was clinical ethics advice, which offers support in medical decisions with ethical questions. This advice is aimed at patients, relatives and specialists and attaches great importance to a patient -oriented and safe care. The Ierm ethics team is active both at the University Hospital AKH Vienna and at the Medical University of Vienna and works closely with the Wigev to ensure the practical implementation of ethics issues and its continuous development. Scientific disputes and ongoing projects are accompanied by a separate research group, which also documents results in practice, such as the Ierm informed.

Workshops & lectures for ethical exchange

The symposium consisted of various formats such as lectures, discussions and workshops. It was particularly paid to ensuring that clinical ethics advice in difficult decision -making situations provides orientation and increases both the safety of the patients and the well -being of the employees. Andrea Sailer, the nursing director of the Hietzing Clinic, took the opportunity to thank the Ethics team for their important contribution. A look into the future shows that more than 120 ethics moderators are trained in the Wigev and clinical ethics advice has already become an integral part of modern health care.

An important core element of training for ethics consultants is further training in medical ethics, which is offered by the master's degree in medical ethics. This course, which is aimed at people in the healthcare system, includes three block events: two basic courses on ethical case advice and a moderation module. Among other things, the participants learn how to tackle ethical conflicts and share responsibility within teams. There is also the possibility of learning techniques to moderate case reviews, which makes decision -making in the hospital much easier, reports the Unimedizin Mainz.

Future -oriented ethics mediation

For a certification by the Academy for Ethics in Medicine (AEM), participation in specific seminars is necessary, which deals with the relationship between morality, ethics and law as well as the organization of ethics advice in the hospital. The next dates for ethical case consultations and moderation training have already been determined and open up new perspectives for everyone involved. The prices for the seminars are set fairly: 300 euros each for the basic courses and 350 euros for moderation training.

The events have set themselves the goal of further promoting ethics work in the health sector. Interested parties can register online, with a minimum number of participants of ten and a maximum number of 30 people available to enable intensive exchange. This shows that the topic is placed not only academically, but extremely practice -oriented in the hands of specialists.

In summary, it can be said that clinical ethics advice and the training of ethics consultants in the Wigev and its partners is a promising path to improve the quality of health care in Vienna - a topic that is more than ever on the agenda in times of uncertainties.
