Danube Island Festival: Allergy warning! Pollen counts are affecting visitors!

On Friday, June 20th, the starting signal will be given for the legendary Danube Island Festival, which will draw the Viennese to the Danube Island with music, cuisine and happy get-togethers until Sunday. And while the anticipation of a cultural spectacle is building, there is an important piece of information: allergy sufferers should pay particular attention to pollen levels when visiting the festival. Especially in the peak grass pollen season, enjoyment can quickly be spoiled. This was reported by meinkreis.at, and the experts from the Pollen Service Vienna also confirm the warning sounds.

The 2025 grass pollen season has proven to be above average active this year, but peak levels of pollution have calmed down somewhat in recent days. Nevertheless, according to heute.at, an increased pollen load is to be expected, especially in the mornings and evenings. The most commonly affected species are ryegrass, riding grass and bentgrass, which thrive in the Danube area and are favored by the warm temperatures and sunshine. But that's not all - the local fungal spores also find ideal conditions in the current warm, humid weather.

Warnings for allergy sufferers

The main cause of allergies is not just grass. Tree of heaven and sweet chestnut also contribute to increased pollen levels. While the flowering of the tree of heaven has already reached its peak, allergies to the sweet chestnut are relatively rare. However, birch pollen allergy sufferers should be prepared for cross-reactions, warns meinbezirk.at.

For anyone who has recently struggled with allergies, it's a good idea to have medication on hand. According to Maxmilian Bastl from Pollen Service Vienna, it is advisable to be prepared for the allergens in the air. Particular attention should be paid to fungal spores, especially Alternaria and Cladosporium, as they can explode in warm, humid weather.

Tips to Relieve Allergy Symptoms

Current forecasts show that allergic reactions cannot be ruled out in sunny weather, especially in the early morning hours and evenings. Allergy sufferers should prepare well in advance and obtain further information about pollen levels in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. If you act in good time, you can enjoy the Danube Island Festival with a little more carefreeness.

Preparations for the Danube Island Festival are in full swing and looking at the weather conditions, things are looking good. Optimistic forecasts can be expected both in terms of visitor numbers and the weather. Therefore: Enjoy the festival, but remember to take care of your health too! Further information will be continually updated leading up to the weekend so allergy sufferers can plan the best time to visit.
