Austrian Concrete Prize 2025: Sustainable architecture inspires!
On June 24, 2025, a significant event was celebrated at the Vienna Technical Museum: the awarding of the Austrian Concrete Prize. This award is considered the most important for innovative and sustainable construction with concrete in Austria. The expert jury, led by Anja Fischer, a respected architect from Vienna, had the difficult task of evaluating the submitted projects. A total of 82 construction projects were submitted, representing a jump of 57 projects compared to 2023. This is an impressive example of how popular sustainable construction is now OTS reported.
The jury evaluated the projects according to strict criteria such as sustainability, functionality, performance, circularity, resource conservation as well as innovation and design. And the result is impressive: Concrete impressed in all categories and the award-winning structures are considered lighthouse projects for the future of construction with this valuable material. How Solid construction mentioned, the participating projects demonstrate the innovative power of concrete as a building material.
The award winners in detail
The competition categories included residential construction, educational and administrative construction and revitalization. The winning projects are:
- Revitalisierung: Kulturzentrum Mattersburg – Einreichendes Unternehmen: Wopfinger Transportbeton Ges.m.b.H. Hier wurde ein Brutalismus-Bau aus 1976 respektvoll saniert, was das Engagement für nachhaltige Praktiken unterstreicht.
In addition, recognitions were awarded in various categories, for example for the Lendmark in Graz in residential construction and for the elementary and middle school Leopold-Kohr-Straße/Barbara-Prammer-Schule in Vienna in the area of educational and administrative construction. These awards show the construction industry that sustainable building is not only a duty but also an opportunity, as various experts including PlanRadar, emphasize.
The way of the future
Sustainable building is not just a trend, but the foundation for the future of architecture. It requires a shift in thinking across the industry, from planning to execution. The challenges are great, from rising construction error costs, which surveys show account for about 14% of industry revenue, to the need to integrate new technologies and materials.
The future will be about closing the gap between planners' expectations and reality. In order to achieve both economic and ecological benefits, innovative approaches and sustainable practices must be integrated into everyday construction work. Companies like PlanRadar support this process by ensuring efficient project management to ensure quality standards and minimize costs.
With a view to the next Austrian Concrete Prize, which will be awarded in 2027, it is to be hoped that even more projects will find their way into the evaluation - and thus give further impetus to sustainable construction. Because one thing is clear: there is something going on!
