A new environmentally friendly course will be taken in Vienna from December 1, 2025. With the introduction of ten new emission-free hydrogen buses, which will operate on the demanding line 39A between Heiligenstadt and Sievering, Wiener Linien is focusing on a sustainable future in public transport. An important detail: The hydrogen that powers the buses is produced from green electricity from Wien Energie at the Wiener Netze Smart Campus in Simmering. Over 80 percent of Vienna's passengers already use climate-friendly means of transport such as subways, trams and electric buses, which shows that environmentally conscious driving is already very popular in the city.
Innovative technology for best performance
The hydrogen buses from CaetanoBus operate with a powerful 180 kW electric motor from Siemens and a 70 kW fuel cell from Toyota. This combination not only enables a range of over 400 kilometers without refueling, but also makes it particularly light, which is ideal for Vienna's hilly character. There is also capacity for 78 passengers, including space for wheelchairs and strollers, and the vehicles are air-conditioned.
What is particularly noteworthy is that line 39A is the twelfth bus line in Vienna to switch entirely to zero-emission vehicles. There are already two lines in the city center, 2A and 3A, with battery-powered hydrogen buses. Other lines also rely on electric drives, which makes Wiener Linien a pioneer in the decarbonization of local public transport, according to the Vienna lines.
Hydrogen as the key to clean mobility
Hydrogen bus technology is now increasingly being viewed worldwide as an alternative to diesel vehicles. Recent advances in hydrogen fuel cell technology have significantly improved not only the efficiency but also the performance of hydrogen buses. An important step has been taken here with investments of around 10.4 million euros in the new vehicles. These buses are housed in the Leopoldau bus garage and are refueled and serviced directly at the company's own hydrogen filling station.
The hydrogen buses promise not only long-term savings in operating costs, but also significant environmental benefits. Innovative solutions improve the air quality in the city and also improve the quality of life of Viennese people. The hydrogen bus sector shows clear growth prospects until 2025.
