Public transport chaos in Vienna: U4 and S-Bahn closed until September!

From Saturday, June 28, 2025, the motto in Vienna is: construction sites and delays on public transport! The subway lines U4 and U6 as well as the S-Bahn main line will be closed in sections until September 1, 2025. This means that passengers have to prepare for significant restrictions, such as today.at reported.

The U4 subway line will now only be in operation between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke and from Hütteldorf to Schottenring. The reason for the partial closures is urgently needed general overhauls in the closed section. As an alternative, the replacement Bim line E4 and the rerouted line D will take over traffic in the affected area. For the U6, the Tscherttegasse station is only served in the direction of Siebenhirten; Passengers therefore have to change in Meidling to reach their destinations. If you want to go from Tscherttegasse to Floridsdorf, you should drive to the pumping station and change there.

Construction sites on the S-Bahn and trams

The main S-Bahn line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern will also be included in the work and will be closed until September 1st. This is part of the “S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade” program to improve the infrastructure. For everyone who relies on the S-Bahn, a rail replacement service with yellow direct buses is offered from Praterstern to Floridsdorf, while a blue SEV bus serves all stations. Track work is underway on Hütteldorfer Straße, which will lead to the closure of line 49; Lines 46 and 52 take over parts of the route.

But construction is not only taking place in the subway area: From July 1, 2025, extensive work will begin on the Ringstrasse, including Kärntner Ring, Schubertring and Universitätsring. Four tram lines – 1, 2, 71 and D – will be rerouted here, and this will partially be the case until the end of August. To defuse the situation, the subway will increase traffic in other areas.

Modernizations in Vienna

The current restrictions are part of a larger restructuring of public transport in Vienna. Loud Vienna lines Extensive renovation and modernization work will be carried out in the tram and subway area in 2025. In the summer of 2025, the U4 will be divided in the section between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke, and since January 13th, passengers have had to expect that only every second train will run to Heiligenstadt.

In addition, expansions and renovations are also planned for the U1 and U6: platforms on the U1 will be replaced from March to July 2025 and new switches will be installed on the U6 between Spittelau and Jägerstraße. The long-planned modernization of the Tscherttegasse station will also begin in spring 2025.

In 2024, 8.6 kilometers of tram tracks and 53 switches have already been replaced, and eleven kilometers of tracks and 45 new switches in the tram network are on the agenda for 2025. The aim is to reduce slow speeds and offer passengers better service.

Passengers should regularly inform themselves about the current traffic situation and prepare for inconveniences, but also keep in mind the advantages of the upcoming modernizations. Further information about diversions, travel times and replacement services is available online at Vienna lines and the ÖBB to find.
