Viennese patients seek healing in Sarajevo: A new age of health!

Health care in Vienna is enjoying a new impetus thanks to the innovative cooperation with Sarajevo. Patients from Vienna are increasingly preferring treatment at the newly opened ASA Hospital in the Bosnian capital. The private hospital, which has space for 180 beds and 10 operating rooms on an area of 36,000 square meters, opened its doors on April 6, 2022 and has since treated around 15,000 patients. According to MeinBezirk, the medical facility has quickly become a popular contact point for people from Austria and Germany.

Highly qualified medical services combined with attractive prices make the ASA Hospital particularly attractive. MedUni Vienna is directly involved in ensuring the quality of care and works with the consulting firm MUVI, which provides both the international medical director and the management of the nursing staff. The focus is on training, medical innovations and research. This also creates real-time consultation between Viennese doctors and their Bosnian colleagues, which further increases the quality of treatment.

Growth and Opportunities in Healthcare

The reasons why more and more people are choosing treatments in Sarajevo are varied. In short: short waiting times, cheap airfares and the opportunity to receive high-quality medical services at a fraction of the cost. Flights from Vienna to Sarajevo start at just 149 euros, making access to these offers even easier. ASA Hospital focuses on minimally invasive procedures, assisted insemination and internal examinations to provide patients with comprehensive care.

The ASA Group also aims to improve the quality of life in Bosnia and Herzegovina and plans to build another hospital, which could be considered the first private general hospital in the region. The collaboration with MedUni Vienna is used to improve standard healthcare. At the same time, around 400 new jobs are to be created to counteract the brain drain of medical talent. The hospital also plans to develop centers of excellence in areas such as maternal and child care, minimally invasive procedures and interventional radiology.

The healthcare system in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The health sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been restructured in recent years through reforms that have focused on primary health care. According to EuroHealthObservatory, care is provided by community health centers while specialists work in secondary care. These measures made it possible to increase the number of family medicine specialists and stabilize the system as a whole. However, high out-of-pocket expenses remain, particularly for low-income households, making access to necessary medical services difficult.

The healthcare partnership between Vienna and Sarajevo is a prime example of intercultural cooperation that not only benefits patients, but also strengthens the region's medical infrastructure. Despite all the progress, it should be noted that challenges remain in the country's healthcare system when it comes to financing and the quality of care. It remains exciting to see how this dynamic will develop in the future.
