Wadephul in Vienna: Germany and Austria are strengthening their partnership!

Relations between Germany and Austria are closer than ever before. Thousands of commuters cross the border every day, be it for work, study or to visit family and friends. These special connections are more than just geographical; they are the foundation of a dynamic partnership that links both countries economically and culturally and historically. In this context, German Foreign Minister Wadephul is traveling to Vienna to intensify cooperation between the two countries. That reports that Foreign Office.

Wadephul's talks with his Austrian counterpart Beate Meinl-Reisinger have a clear goal: strengthening EU ties in the Western Balkans and expanding bilateral discussions on European strategic issues. “There is something to be said,” warns Wadephul and emphasizes that close cooperation is particularly important in order to overcome the challenges of current foreign and security policy.

Economic ties and trade

The economic relations between Germany and Austria are extremely strong. Around two thirds of German foreign trade takes place within Europe, with Austria being an important partner. This is currently reflected in a trade surplus of 27.3 billion euros in 2023. It is clear that Germany and Austria pursue common interests, especially when it comes to reducing bureaucratic hurdles and promoting cross-border cooperation. The Federal Agency for Civic Education highlights that foreign trade between the two countries is flourishing due to these close links.

A central topic of the talks in Vienna is the effects of the Ukraine crisis. Both states are calling for decisive action within Europe, in particular stricter measures against Russia's evasion of sanctions. Wadephul emphasizes that a fair trading environment for everyone is of great importance in order to avoid trade disputes, especially between the EU and the US.

Where is the EU heading?

Another topic in the exchange is the EU-MERCOSUR free trade agreement, which could not only offer new export opportunities but should also contribute to sustainable growth. “This is an important step in the right direction,” says Wadephul, although he is aware that the path there is not easy. Especially in the current geopolitical situation, all trading partners must pull together.

No less important is the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, which is also on the agenda. Wadephul also meets Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in Vienna. Germany is calling for an expansion of humanitarian aid and unhindered access to all parts of the Gaza Strip. The most pressing concern remains the creation of a ceasefire that allows Hamas to release all hostages. The focus here is on a political solution to ensure Israel's security and prospects for the Palestinians.

Outlook for the future

For the coming months, it is crucial that Germany and Austria actively shape their role within the EU beyond bilateral relations. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Stresses that support for the EU accession countries as well as local and regional structures is essential to ensure long-term stability in the region. Both countries are well on their way to achieving this together.

At a time when many European countries are confronted with political and economic challenges, Germany and Austria show once again that they are not only partners, but also friends, steering a clear course towards a common future.
