Track chaos in Vienna: Massive construction work paralyzes the inner city!

Things are going haywire in Vienna at the moment. From today, July 1, 2025, the major track construction theater has begun, which will paralyze the tram network in the inner city. The work affects the important section between Schwarzenbergplatz, Opera and the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring and has a direct impact on four tram lines: the 1er, 2er, D and 71er. The areas around the Parliament, the Burgtheater and the State Opera are particularly feeling the effects of the restrictions, which will last until August 5th, in the middle of the summer season, which is busy with tourism.

It will be particularly tricky for passengers commuting on the route between Schubertring and Volkstheater. This connection is currently not available and Wiener Linien advises users to use the U2 and U3 subway lines or alternative routes. An increased number of passengers has been noticed at the Volkstheater itself, but the general situation in the city remains calm.

Lack of information causes confusion

Unfortunately, the first day of the lockdown left passengers a bit confused. The information situation was not optimal, which led to questions and confusion. To remedy this, Wiener Linien is taking increased measures: There are multilingual notices and mobile service staff who take care of passengers' concerns.

However, the track construction work is not the only construction site that the Viennese have to deal with. Work has also been underway on the Währinger Belt since June 24th, with two lanes closed during the day. This leads to traffic jams in the AKH, Alser Straße and Volksoper areas. In addition, the Brigittenau Bridge has been renovated since July 1st, with 281 meters of road being replaced.

Numerous diversions and further construction work

The traffic chaos in the city is by no means limited to the trams. Travelers in Landstraßer Hauptstrasse and Schlachthausgasse are also affected: Line 18 has been completely stopped here from the beginning of July to the end of August. The diversions are numerous and require a keen eye from passengers. From March to July, the 18 line only ran to a limited extent, and there is also a replacement bus 18E between Fasangasse and Heinrich-Drimmel-Platz.

There are also exciting developments for line 43: This will be renewed on Jörgerstrasse from mid-June to September, in several phases. The diversion takes line 9 to Gersthof, while line 49 has been running on the regular route again since June 30th after the tracks and stops were modernized.

In Floridsdorf, the construction work on Franz-Jonas-Platz is almost completed. Lines 25, 26 and 31 will soon be running as scheduled again here. The construction work on Hütteldorfer Straße, on the other hand, will last until the end of June and entail temporary restrictions: Line 49 will be replaced by early trips on line 52.

In summary, one can say that the Wiener Linien has come up with a lot of ideas to counteract disadvantages for passengers. However, the large number of diversions and bus replacement trips mean that there is a lot of need for action. Anyone who is well informed will be able to master the spatial challenges surrounding construction sites.
