Revolution in medicine: New Center in Vienna accelerates research!
Wien, Österreich - Vienna is preparing for an exciting change in medical research. Together with the federal government, the city, together with the federal government, puts three -digit million amounts into innovative projects. The focus is on the development and provision of new medication that patients are available years before the official approval. This is seen as a big step towards patient-oriented health care, as the Kleine Zeitung reports .
Herwig Wetzlinger, who has headed the Vienna AKH since 2014 and is also the Vice General Director of the Vienna Health Association, has extended his contract until 2029. It describes the ongoing developments in the medical field and presents the planned center for translational Medicine (CTM) as an "engine for medical progress" in Austria.
The Center for Translational Medicine
An important milestone in this development was celebrated on October 17, 2024: the same celebration of the new CTM. This center offers space for innovative research groups in translational medicine on an area of 26,289 square meters. The construction should help to quickly and effectively bring knowledge from basic research into clinical application. The CTM is planned as a turntable for several medical disciplines. Markus Müller, the rector of the MedUni Vienna, emphasizes how important the combination of basic research and clinical application is to develop new medicines under GMP conditions.
The CTM will be equipped with modern laboratory areas, a BioBank as well as institutions for bioinformatics and preclinical research. This realizes a continuous chain from experimental laboratory examination to clinical phase I/II research. The aim is to strengthen the international competitiveness of Austrian medicine and to promote personalized therapies in particular in the areas of cardiovascular and immunological diseases as well as cancer.
infrastructure and equipment
The equipment of the CTM is impressive, with special facilities such as GMP facilities for cell therapies, radiopharmacy and biologicals as well as an animal facility for preclinical imaging. In addition, the center will have extensive core facilities with access to modern technologies that enable researchers an efficient way of working.
The CTM relies on an open architecture with a large conference area, library area and a cafeteria. The office and laboratory areas are strategically placed between the University Hospital AKH Vienna and the MedUni Campus Mariannengasse to ensure optimal knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary cooperation.
With the completion of the CTM by 2025, a new chapter is opened in Vienna's medical research, which is of great importance not only for the city, but for all of Austria. Here the motto "from the laboratory to the bedside and back" is practically implemented. The new research infrastructure not only promises progress in medical treatment, but also an immediate proximity to the challenges with which patients are confronted every day.
Let's be excited to see what the future brings and how these ambitious projects will change the health system in Austria.
