Vienna is pitching in: Mega pipe secures drinking water for the future!

Something is happening underground in Vienna! The city has set itself the goal of securing the water supply for the coming years and is investing heavily in infrastructure. New water pipes are currently being laid under the Baumgarten Bridge, which will supply the city with fresh spring water from the Alps. This measure is part of a comprehensive renovation that is scheduled to be completed by July 2025. A section of the historic water pipe from 1895, with a diameter of 870 millimeters, will be renewed over a total of 70 meters under the Vienna River to ensure the connection between the Lainz water tank and the Hungerberg tank in Döbling. So reported Today.

Construction work started in April 2024 and affects not only the Baumgarten Bridge, but also St.-Veit-Gasse, Hietzinger Kai and Hadik- and Zehetnergasse. The city relies on close coordination between the water and sewer construction projects in order to keep costs low and to make public services efficient. This synergy effect leads to improvements taking place in several places in the city.

Details about the construction work

Particular attention is paid to laying a cladding pipe with a diameter of 1.6 meters under the Vienna River, which is placed in the ground using special machines. The new drinking water pipe itself has a diameter of one meter and will be put into operation in the coming summer months. The work also includes the pressure laying of 23 reinforced concrete pipes, which together weigh 177 tons. The joining of these pipes takes place in so-called flysch rock and is a technical masterpiece that is intended to secure the water supply in the long term. Anyone interested can find information about the construction site and the work in the information center at Gaudenzdorfer Gurtel, which is open Thursday to Saturday.

The investments for this project, which is considered essential for improving the drinking water supply and preparing for the new Wiental Canal, amount to around three million euros. This measure is part of a large-scale renovation, in which a total of 160 kilometers of pipelines in Vienna have been replaced since 2021. What does that mean exactly? The route corresponds to the distance from Vienna to Bratislava and back, which underlines the scale of the efforts to sustainably secure the water supply in the city with over a million inhabitants. So reported OTS.

The look into the future

The next big project is already in the starting blocks: the renewal of another water pipe from 1910 on Preindlsteg will begin at the beginning of 2026. Here too, the city will invest in the infrastructure to further increase security of supply. This is important not only for the existing structures, but also as preparation for urban development in the coming years. After all, the city wants to ensure that the water supply keeps pace with the growth of the metropolis. A goal that is being further advanced by the ongoing renovation of the 3rd North Main Line and various other water pipes, as well as by the Viennese press caused.

In summary, it can be said that the city of Vienna not only wants to improve the current situation through these measures, but also wants to be well prepared for the future. In this way, the city not only ensures the necessary drinking water supply, but also ensures that future generations in Vienna can be supplied with fresh, clear water from the Alps.
