Inclusive and creative: The Special” in Mariahilf opens up new horizons!

In the middle of the hustle and bustle of the 6th district of Vienna, a remarkable place has established itself: “Das Spezial”. This inclusive concept store not only combines a shopping experience with delicious food, but also offers a valuable daily structure for people with mental illnesses and cognitive impairments. The shop was launched about three years ago by the Commit association and initially struggled with low foot traffic in the 17th district under the name “Pappl”. A move to the more inviting Gumpendorfer Straße 56, with bright shop windows and an inviting atmosphere, brought a breath of fresh air and more visibility to the project, as MeinBezirk reports.

Veronika Brunner, who has been the site manager for a year, ensures that the focus is not only on the products, but also on the people. “Das Spezial” offers a variety of handmade products, including creative ceramics, bags and cosmetic items, which are made in Commit’s day structures and other social institutions. Particularly noteworthy are the innovative papier-mâché products, which are made from old newspapers and tomato jars.

A holistic concept

However, the offer in “Das Spezial” goes beyond pure sales. Every day, 10 to 12 people get involved here and decide for themselves in which area they want to work. The employees have the freedom to choose between different activities such as in the creative workshop, kitchen or housekeeping. Specialists are available to assist participants and offer individual support. The Vianobis emphasizes that this framework helps people to actively shape their day and also promote their own mobility.

Social interaction also includes a regular chess game that takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. Board games such as Uno or “Don’t get angry” are also available to strengthen the community and enable pleasant hours.

Creativity and community

“Das Spezial” sees itself not only as a sales point, but also as a place for exchange and community. The team's goal is to increase visibility in Grätzl and expand networking with the neighborhood. Opening times are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The integration center also hosts creative workshops and leisure activities that help participants rediscover their interests and develop personally. The offers range from creative designs to sporting activities, with support from an experienced team always guaranteed, as Albatros outlines.

Ultimately, “Das Spezial” is not just a place where you can buy products, but a lively space that embodies inclusion and promotes social exchange. It's worth a visit to get to know the creative diversity and the committed people behind it.
