Young woman attacked in Vienna: folding knives and bloody incidents!

In the heart of Vienna, more precisely at Hofferplatz in Ottakring, an incident occurred today that once again shines a light on the problem of violence in relationships. An 18-year-old Viennese woman threatened her 27-year-old ex-boyfriend with a folding knife and injured his neck. The incident happened around 2 p.m. and is not the first of its kind, as the two have had to deal with violence in the past. On April 23, 2025, the man was seriously injured with a piece of glass in his apartment in Vienna-Margareten and had to be treated medically, which had significant consequences for both sides.

The police reacted immediately and temporarily arrested the woman near the crime scene. In addition to the folding knife, which was confiscated, the authorities immediately issued a ban on entry and approach as well as a temporary ban on weapons against the young woman. However, she denied the allegations and was released after the initial investigation. The incident makes it clear how serious the issue of violence in relationships remains and the risks associated with it.

Fight against violence – a social problem

Violence against women remains an issue that cannot be ignored. According to a survey on the topic of “Gender-based violence against women and other forms of interpersonal violence”, it is shown that such attacks disproportionately often affect women. This survey, published by Eurostat and the Federal Chancellery, provides important data and shows that victims of violence are often confronted with attacks both within and outside of intimate relationships. Issues such as stalking, sexual harassment and childhood violence are also part of this frightening reality.

Given the high number of cases, the European Commission is calling for comprehensive action to combat gender-based violence as part of its Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025. One of the demands is improved data collection in order to recognize the full extent of the problem and take targeted measures.

Support for those affected

Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig emphasizes the urgency of not tolerating violence against women. Together with the deputy mayor and women's city councilor Kathrin Gaál, a strong network for women in need is being created. They agree that it is time to demand a rethink from society in order to eliminate violence and offer women the support they urgently need in crisis situations.

There are various contact points available in Vienna for anyone who is in a stressful situation or knows someone who needs help:

  • Polizei-Notruf: 133
  • Wiener Interventionsstelle: 01/585 32 88
  • Männerberatungsstelle: 01/603 28 28
  • Landeskriminalamt Wien, Kriminalprävention: Hotline 0800/216346

The current incidents and the opening of the new women's shelter underline once again that the fight against violence in relationships is a task for society as a whole. Only through joint action can long-term improvement be achieved.
