The evolutionary human leukocyte antigen (HLA) also remains a hot topic in the world of health. This gene from chromosome 6 is responsible for regulating the immune system and plays an important role in organ transplants and the recognition of non-self cells by the immune system. HLA variability is increasingly recognized as crucial for immune competence in the defense against disease, particularly in cancer patients and in the development of immunotherapies.
Although the HLA Challenge mainly wins the hearts of handball fans, understanding the underlying biochemical processes and the importance of the HLA system for the immune system remains of enormous importance for health policy and research.
