Angry residents: Bus 80A diversion until May 2026 is causing chaos!

The traffic situation in Vienna is currently a hot topic due to the diversion of bus route 80A. Until May 2026, passengers will have to accept the diversion via Erdberger Lände towards Neu Marx while construction work is taking place on Stadionallee to extend tram line 18. These diversions affect both the stops in the direction of St. Marx and those in the direction of Praterstern, which represents a significant disruption for many residents, especially in the Wasserwiese allotment garden area, as they lose their usual connection.

As meinkreis.at reports, the construction work on the Stadionallee is necessary in order to structurally adapt it. These excavations will require a suspension of bus service, which will last until the end of May 2026. Around 1,000 residents are directly affected by this diversion. The Friedensgasse, Lukschgasse, Rustenschacherallee, Klaschkaweg and Stadionbrücke stops are no longer served, which makes daily commuting even more complicated.

Political reactions and residents' initiatives

The impact of the diversion does not go unnoticed. Sabine Keri from the ÖVP had already tried to maintain a continuous public transport connection between Wittelsbachstrasse and Lukschgasse. However, her application was rejected. These political decisions are met with a lot of dissatisfaction among residents, who have started a signature campaign to support their demand for improved connections. These signatures were handed over to district leader Alexander Nikolai (SPÖ) and forwarded to the city council office of Ulli Sima (SPÖ).

The Wiener Linien points out that there are options to still connect to the public transport network. Passengers can reach Lukschgasse with bus 80A in the direction of Praterstern. A change at Wittelsbachstrasse also allows you to continue your journey to Schlachthausgasse. If you would like to take the diversion into account between November 10, 2025, 4:00 a.m. and May 31, 2026, 10:55 p.m., you can find out more on the öffi.at website.

Impact on passengers

The transfer and the relocated stops can be inconvenient for many passengers. The 80A will be rerouted via Erdberger Lände instead of Schüttelstraße, which will result in a forced adjustment for many daily users. Those affected agree: Something has to be done here to maintain the quality of life in the affected area.
