Lobmeyr's chandelier shines for Austria at the EXPO in Japan!

In the unique atmosphere of the Vienna Hofburg, a magnificent chandelier causes a sensation, which is the ambassador of Austria at the EXPO in Japan. The chandelier with the illustrious name “Maria Theresia” is the highlight of the traditional company J. & L. Lobmeyr, which has been producing chandeliers and glass tableware at Salesianergasse 9 in Vienna since 1972. A company that developed through the merger of the Lobmeyr glazier and the Zahn chandelier manufacturer and today has over 50 employees who practice the craft with dedication. High-quality materials and masterful workmanship are the trademarks that have also earned Lobmeyr orders from luxury brands such as Tiffany. My district reports.

Of course, Lobmeyr also doesn't miss out on public institutions, especially the Hofburg. Over a thousand chandeliers are regularly on the list for restoration and polishing. The trained hands of three people are often needed to make the elegant pieces shine again. Workshop manager Franz Doppelreiter explains that the metal design technique was previously known as “Gürtler”. Every step from metal bending to glass grinding to engraving helps keep the tradition alive and pass on the artistry.

Tradition, craftsmanship and luxury

Managing director Johannes Rath, who is the sixth generation to head the company, took over the business shortly before his 30th birthday. In a conversation, he not only emphasizes the importance of chandeliers for the Vienna cityscape, but also their role as part of the world cultural heritage. “Buying a chandelier not only finances magnificent interiors, it also has a deeper value,” explains Rath. Prices start at 10,000 euros and can go well beyond that, depending on the size and level of detail.

But despite this splendor, many orders come primarily from private individuals. Public bodies often do not have a budget for large-scale purchases, which poses a challenge for Lobmeyr. Nevertheless, the company remains an important player in the Austrian craft tradition and relies on quality and excellence in order to continue to be successful in the future.

A look into history

Lobmeyr's roots go back to 1826, when four brothers from Switzerland, originally working as pastry chefs, settled in Italy and began running a pastry shop. While the business at that time focused on fine confectionery, in the late 19th century the Italian pasticcerie developed into the café culture that shapes the image of Italian gastronomy today. Lobmeyr himself can look back on a history full of creative highlights and brings the values of bygone times into every handmade piece. At Lobmeyr They appreciate the art of craftsmanship and constantly add new facets to tradition.

So the Viennese company remains not only an important part of the local culture, but also a ray of hope in the world of craftsmanship, which still has its place in an ever-changing world.
