Arrest after 13 years: Wiener Neudorf cell phone robber caught!

In an exciting twist, the police were able to solve a spectacular robbery that took place over 13 years ago in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria. On April 4, 2012, a group of at least four masked perpetrators attacked a logistics company, where they threatened two employees with pistols. The employees were bound with fabric tape and had to watch idly as the robbers stole more than 5,700 cell phones worth over 1.63 million euros, which were loaded from the warehouse onto a truck, Puls24 reports.

The search for the perpetrators began immediately. Two suspects were arrested in Austria at the beginning of 2013 and were sentenced to several years in prison in August 2013, which they have now completed. However, two other accomplices remained on the run and a European arrest warrant was issued against them. This manhunt has finally been successfully concluded with the arrest of a 56-year-old, a Serbian citizen.

Arrest at the border

The arrest of the wanted man took place on August 6, 2023 at the border between Serbia and Montenegro, based on the European Arrest Warrant mentioned above. He was extradited to Austria on October 16, 2023 and taken to the Vienna-Josefstadt prison. However, when questioned, the accused refused to make a statement. This raises questions about whether or not he would want to consider cooperating with investigators.

Investigations and outlook

The investigations by the Lower Austria State Criminal Police Office had already clearly established the identities of the four suspects, but the escape of the two remaining perpetrators seemed unstoppable for a long time. The current arrest represents a crucial step in solving this criminal case, with authorities continuing to work to bring the remaining accomplices to justice.

Solving robberies of this magnitude is not only a question of justice for the police, but also a sign that the security forces are not letting up, even if years pass. It remains to be seen how this case will progress and what information the 56-year-old will reveal.
