Zelensky visit to Vienna: police in large-scale operation and demonstrations announced!
Next week, our Vienna will be the scene of international diplomacy, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is expected in the city on Monday, June 16th. This important visit includes meetings with Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. Extensive measures have already been taken to ensure safety throughout the events.
Particularly in the area of the Presidential Chancellery and the Federal Chancellery, there will be closures from 9 a.m., as meinbezirk.at reports. The exact number of police forces deployed is still secret, but it is clear that a large police presence will be necessary. Among other things, the special forces WEGA and EKO Cobra, as well as the police service dog unit and traffic police are deployed.
Demonstrations announced
Zelensky's visit, which comes amid Ukraine's ongoing conflict, will attract not only security forces but also large numbers of protesters. Two rallies are planned for Monday: The “Mrija” association will demonstrate in front of the Outer Castle Gate with around 20 participants in support of Ukraine. At the same time, up to 500 people will protest at Maria-Theresien-Platz under the motto “For peace, neutrality and sovereignty”. Ballhausplatz was originally intended as the location for this demonstration, but unfortunately it is in the restricted area.
During these events, some nearby cultural institutions will also remain closed. The National Library on Heldenplatz and other educational institutions, including the House of Austrian History, will not be accessible all day on Monday, making the impact of the square closure clear.
Insight into the situation in Ukraine
Zelensky's visit comes in the context of a difficult situation in Ukraine, where Russian forces are making military advances in some regions, such as the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions. According to current reports, such as those published by zeit.de, military conflicts are increasingly being observed. Russian troops have advanced further, resulting in heavy losses for both sides. Ukrainian forces are also reportedly carrying out attacks on Russian positions, illustrating the volatile situation.
The preparations for Zelensky's visit therefore have a double meaning: they are not only an expression of political solidarity with Ukraine, but also a sign of stability, which is important in difficult times. We will keep our readers from Vienna up to date on further developments.
