Thunderbolts: Marvel's new hit impresses with strong characters!
The anticipation for the new Marvel blockbuster “Thunderbolts” is increasing, as the film will be released in cinemas on May 2nd, 2025. Marvel has now completed the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with films such as “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and has started the current phases 4 and 5, which heralded the so-called Multiverse Saga. So far there are twelve films from this era, although not all of them were equally convincing. However, films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” are real highlights of this new phase, as TV-Media reports.
“Thunderbolts” comes to the screen as the 36th film in the MCU and the 14th part of Phase 5. Directed by Jake Schreier, expectations are high as the film has already received positive reviews. The strong figure drawing, which deals with themes such as loss, pain and coping with traumatic experiences, is particularly celebrated. Another central motif is the concept of “family”, which gives the film a deeper emotional tone. “Thunderbolts” also offers high-level entertainment. But what exactly can viewers expect?
The star ensemble and the plot
The main cast includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier and David Harbor as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian. The excellent ensemble is complemented by Olga Kurylenko (Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent) and many other talented actors, as Marvel Cinematic Universe Fandom notes.
The film's plot follows an unconventional team of anti-heroes who must come to terms with their past while becoming embroiled in a deadly game played by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Yelena Belova works as de Fontaine's enforcer and infiltrates an O.X.E. facility. The dynamic becomes even more exciting when the U.S. Congress tries to remove de Fontaine through impeachment proceedings.
Production and challenges
Development on “Thunderbolts” was announced back on June 9, 2022, and the original filming date has been pushed back multiple times – from July 2024, to December 2024, and finally July 25, 2025. Production delays by the Writers Guild of America highlight the challenges facing the industry. Filming finally began in spring 2024. Interestingly, the music for the film will be composed by Son Lux, which should add some extra oomph.
Although actor Harrison Ford was originally cast in the role of Thaddeus Ross, he was later removed from the project. Steven Yeun also had to throw in the towel due to scheduling conflicts, although Lewis Pullman steps in as Sentry, while Geraldine Viswanathan comes on board as Mel Gold to replace Ayo Edebiri.
A look into the future
“Thunderbolts” shows that Marvel is tackling more serious and dark themes in the new era without neglecting the entertainment value. All eyes are on this superhero epic, and anticipation among the fan base is growing. Whether the film can live up to expectations remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the return of the Thunderbolts will be an important part of the journey in the Marvel Universe, and many hope that this film will be as convincing as the previous highlights of the Multiverse Saga.
