Rapid train closure in Vienna: What passengers need to know now!

Following today's reports, ÖBB announced that the main express railway line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern will be closed from June 29th to September 1st, 2025 for extensive modernization work. The work aims to make the route safer and increase capacity. In addition, the train control system will be modernized and the platforms will be lengthened to make room for longer trains. This is intended to optimize the traffic flow in the region, as 5min.at reports.

In order not to let travelers down during this time, two rail replacement bus routes will be set up. The blue line will stop at the Traisengasse and Handelskai S-Bahn stations, while the yellow direct bus line will run without stops from Floridsdorf to Praterstern. The buses run daily in the morning until the evening, with departure times also available in the SCOTTY mobil app, as oebb.at informs.

Preparation for construction work

A color coding system is used at the stations to help passengers orientate themselves better. Furthermore, the ÖBB tickets are also recognized by the Wiener Linien in certain sections, so that subways and trams can be used without any problems. The Vienna lines themselves are also affected by structural adaptations: the U4 route will be renewed between June 28th and August 31st, 2025, which will also have an impact on the timetable.

Specifically, a replacement connection will be set up between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring via the E4 tram line. Passengers can also look forward to other subway and tram connections, such as the U1 from Leopoldau to the main station or the U3 from Simmering to Wien Mitte. These measures are part of the comprehensive modernization of Vienna's transport network, as also described on wienerlinien.at.

Further construction projects in the region

However, the construction work is not just limited to the express train. Restrictions are also expected in Lower Austria: the S40 between Klosterneuburg-Weidling and St. Andrä-Wördern will be replaced by buses during the same period, and all trains on the R40 line that run from Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof to St. Andrä-Wördern will be cancelled. The connections on the REX4 and REX41 lines to Gmünd are also affected by timetable changes.

In addition, there is ongoing track construction work in various parts of Vienna, including on Hütteldorfer Straße, where up to 1,750 meters of tracks are being replaced. This work is intended to help eliminate slow speeds and increase comfort at stops, as stated in another report on wienerlinien.at.

With all of these measures, ÖBB and Wiener Linien show a good hand at improving the city's infrastructure and ensuring mobility for citizens. Although the upcoming lockdowns and restrictions may be challenging for some, this phase will help make Vienna fit for the future.
