Hundreds of students discover the biodiversity on Bisamberg!
The sun shone brightly on Bisamberg when over 400 students from Floridsdorf set off on an exciting journey of discovery. As part of the “My Nature Floridsdorf Lösshohlweg & Trockenrasen” project, the children explored the impressive biodiversity in this valuable natural area, which extends in the northwest of Vienna and is partly managed by the City of Vienna. With the support of the Thermenlinie-Wienerwald-Wiener Becken landscape conservation association, a total of 24 school classes explored the region's unique flora and fauna over six mornings.
The children had the opportunity to experience the species-rich meadows of Bisamberg up close. They discovered numerous plant and animal species such as green lizards, wild bees, beetles and butterflies. A special highlight was the environmental sleuths stand, which presented live animals such as slowworms and common toads. These practical experiences showed the young explorers why it is important to protect and maintain these habitats.
Diverse activities and sustainable education
But the focus wasn't just on nature: a class from the commercial academy and the business school took the opportunity to get to know each other better during a visit to Bisamberg. Under the guidance of their teachers, Prof. Sabine Wachutka and Prof. Barbara Berger, the students took part in various team exercises such as ball games and storytelling to get to know their new classmates better. These activities not only served as team building, but also prepared students for upcoming final exams. In pleasant, sunny weather, the excursion offered an excellent opportunity to have personal conversations and discuss common thoughts on the final thesis.
As part of the educational initiative, it was particularly important to develop an awareness of biodiversity at an early stage. This includes raising awareness of the dependency of all living beings and promoting careful use of natural resources. With the support of educational materials on biodiversity, children learn the importance of different habitats and ecosystems for our ecosystem. The varied experience of nature helps the students develop their own skills in order to actively participate in sustainable developments.
A common goal: protecting nature
As part of the project, the students are also actively involved in preserving the meadows and dry grasslands by removing invasive species and thus contributing to the promotion of local biodiversity. The excellent care by the city of Vienna's forestry company shows how important these habitats are for flora and fauna as well as for people's recreation.
The project is financed by the City of Vienna and the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. In this way, the active involvement of schools in the conservation of biological diversity will continue to be promoted and the next generation will be made aware of environmental protection.
All in all, the excursion to Bisamberg was a complete success, which not only deepened the children's knowledge of their environment, but also strengthened the community within the classes. This shows once again how important outdoor education is in order to raise awareness of nature and its conservation. This is in line with the idea that Bildungsserver also follows by providing resources and materials for biodiversity education to promote interest in nature conservation and ecology.
