Wolfsberger AC celebrates its first win of the season against disappointed Wiener Austria

On August 10, 2025, an exciting duel between Wolfsberger AC and Wiener Austria took place in the Austrian Bundesliga. The hosts from Wolfsberg won 2-0 and celebrated their first win of the season. After an opening defeat against Altach, this success was an important step for the WAC team.

The goals for WAC were scored by Schöpf in the 6th minute and an own goal by Lee in the 23rd minute. For Vienna Austria, however, the game was disappointing. After two rounds, the team only has one point - a draw and a defeat are all the team can show so far. Austria also has to make a lot of improvements in the Conference League qualification after losing 3:4 against Ostrava.

Celebrations and grandstand atmosphere

Before the game, club legend Hans Krankl, better known as “Schneckerl”, was celebrated on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The fans organized an impressive choreography and presented the slogan “70 Years of Schneckerl”. In honor of her former player, Krankl received gifts and a birthday cake from his old team. A video message from well-known coach Carlo Ancelotti was particularly touching and caused a lot of emotion.

Wiener Austria had several opportunities to equalize in the first half, but Dominik Fitz missed a great chance in the 19th minute, while a supposed goal from Malone was canceled out in stoppage time due to a handball. Austria was also unable to convince in the offensive game - shots from Ranftl and Malone ended up in the side netting.

Defensive problems and failures

A significant shortcoming in the Viennese performance was their defensive vulnerability. Defense chief Aleksandar Dragovic was missing due to a thigh injury, which had a negative impact on the stability of the defense. The WAC, on the other hand, was more dynamic offensively, which was also reflected in unused opportunities such as a shot from Atanga from close range that did not produce the desired result in the 50th minute.

The game was characterized by intense duels and physical play. The Viennese had more possession of the ball, but were unable to capitalize on it. The coming weekend could bring a twist for Austria when they play against BW Linz in Lavanttal and possibly be crowned champions of the 2024/25 season.
