Weapons ban zone in favorites: Extension for more security!

The weapon ban zone in Favoritenstrasse is extended by another three months and remains in force until Friday, July 4th. As meinzirk.at was introduced to prevent violent arguments and to improve the security situation in the district. After successful implementation, the prohibition of weapons is now continued until the end of September 2025.

This decision follows the last extension in March. Since then, the state police directorate has been able to report a noticeable improvement in the situation. In the first five months of this year, 43 active police operations were counted, in which a total of 56 weapons were secured. The 41 confiscated knives, which were registered in the course of operations according to the Security Police Act and the Weapons Act, must be emphasized. "These measures already have an impact," says district politician Marcus Franz (SPÖ), who also demands an increase in police presence in the district.

Despite the positive tendencies, there are still dark sides. In the past few months, knife attacks have been repeated in the Reumannplatz, which raised questions about the actual effectiveness of the prohibition zones for residents and security experts. Critics argue that the measures fight symptoms, but do not offer a sustainable solution for the security problem. This skepticism is underlined by expert opinions, which consider similar weapon ban zones as a more symbolic policy than as an effective solution. In this way, the pressure on politics remains high to develop further prevention strategies. An example of such measures are violence prevention projects in schools as the criminologist Dirk Baier demands.

A comprehensive balance from March 2024 to March 2025 shows that a total of 146 weapons were confiscated in Favoritenstrasse. The secured objects also include pepper sprays, whipped rings and electric shocks, which underlines concern about growing willingness to violence in this region. Nevertheless, compliance with the prohibition zone is consistently enforced by fines of up to 1,000 euros for first violations and up to 4,600 euros for repeated transitions.

look into the future

The new regulation for extension is published in a timely manner, and the authorities remain optimistic to further improve security in favorites. Nevertheless, the dialogue about the effectiveness of such weapon ban zones remains a sensitive topic in the face of frequent crime. Comparable measures show mixed results in other cities in Germany, and the call for additional security strategies becomes louder. This is hoping for a combination of prohibitions, police presence and social projects, long -term changes for the benefit of the citizens.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the situation in favorites will develop in the coming months. The weapon ban zone is part of a wider package of measures that also includes video surveillance and central security actions. The hope of a noticeable improvement in public security has also aroused high expectations among residents.
