Southeast tangent: Massive traffic jams threaten – traffic chaos in Vienna!
The construction work on the southeast tangent (A23) is causing heated discussions among commuters and residents. There will be significant traffic disruptions between Wien-Handelskai and the Vienna-Prater junction in the direction of Graz from Friday, November 6th at 10 p.m. until Monday morning at 5 a.m. During this time, traffic is reduced to one lane at night, while two lanes are available during the day. This raises the question: How long should drivers actually expect delays? ASFINAG warns of waiting times of up to four hours, a nightmare for many who want to return to work on time on Monday. Cosmo reports that it will also have an impact on the Donauufer Autobahn (A22) from the Vienna-Kaisermühlen tunnel.
Inner-city routes will also be affected. The Nordbrücke, the Wien-Brigittenauer Lände and the Gurtel, among others, can tell you a thing or two about this. If you rely on Gunoldstrasse or Barawitzkagasse, you should be patient. Johnstrasse, Grünbergstrasse, Altmannsdorfer Strasse, Reichsbrücke and Lasallestrasse are also affected, which is why drivers should plan alternative routes. In order to optimize traffic flow, those responsible have already announced that maintenance work will continue the following weekend, from November 14th to 16th. This time work is being carried out on the Vienna-Handelskai junction in a northerly direction.
Further challenges for commuters
Thomas Kozakow, ASFINAG's regional office manager, describes the ongoing work as necessary maintenance. In fact, work has been underway on the Vienna-Prater Hochstraße for a year. However, the hope that things will get better after that could be deceptive, as another three construction phases are planned for the spring and should be completed before August 2026. Swimming against the tide for all those who rely on road connections.
The past construction site on the A23 in the direction of Vienna-Hirschstetten could already lead to delays of up to four hours. Commuters know from experience: During peak traffic, good time management is crucial. There are also increasing reports that the construction sites at strategic points in the city not only slow down traffic, but also make it difficult to keep an overview of route planning.
The situation remains tense and it remains to be hoped that the work planned for Monday can be completed without further unexpected complications. Anyone who has a long journey ahead of them should keep a close eye on their travel times and, if necessary, switch to public transport. Because the patience of the Viennese is being put to a severe test as the streets continue to be rebuilt and renovated.
