Big brass event in Ulm: 7,000 musicians celebrate All the best!”
The 50th State Trombone Day is just around the corner and will be celebrated in Ulm on June 28th and 29th, 2025. This important event is organized by Evangelical youth organization in Württemberg and promises to be an unforgettable weekend for music lovers. Under the motto “All the best!” Around 7,000 wind players and numerous visitors are expected who want to indulge in a shared musical experience.
The highlight is the large ensemble of 7,000 wind instruments singing Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale “Gloria sei dir gesang”. Anyone interested in historical traditions will be pleased to know that the first State Trombone Day took place in Esslingen in 1901 with just 177 brass players. Another historical moment was the first post-war State Trombone Day in Ulm in 1946, which now sets a signal for a century of music history.
A colorful program for young and old
The program for the 50th State Trombone Day is diverse and appeals to all age groups and musical preferences. The event begins on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 6 p.m. with an opening on Südliche Münsterplatz. It starts with trombone choir music at various locations, followed by a brass serenade and a night concert with the well-known band German Brass. A worship night and the popular disco night in Club Cocomo round off Saturday.
Sunday also has an exciting program that includes twelve public church services and many open-air concerts. Here, visitors can take advantage of the unique opportunity to experience music-making in Ulm's city center and take part in workshops or city tours. A special highlight for young talent is the “Jungbläserfestival”, where young musicians can exchange ideas.
Celebratory highlights and farewell
The event will culminate on Sunday at 4:10 p.m. with a closing ceremony at which Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann and other guests of honor are also expected. The celebrations will end under the motto “Now everyone thanks God” with the impressive ringing of the Ulm Minster bells. These emotional moments are a sign of the strength of the community and the joy of music.
Accompanying the celebration, an exhibition on the history of the State Trombone Day will be on display in the m25, the museum of the city of Ulm, until August 24th. This way, anyone interested can reminisce and learn more about the development and significance of this traditional event.
Finally, it should be mentioned that Hans-Ulrich Nonnenmann, the state trombone manager, will be retiring after the event. His many years of work in the field of trombone choir music have left their mark, and his farewell will certainly bring with it a lot of goosebumps, as the motto suggests.
