Vienna Handelskai transformed: Green urban space by 2026!
Something is finally happening in Vienna! As part of the extensive S-Bahn upgrade, the ÖBB, the city of Vienna and the Brigittenau district have initiated a comprehensive redesign of Maria-Restituta-Platz. The ambitious plans aim to create a modern and welcoming environment around the Wien Handelskai station. By the end of 2027, rail infrastructure and the quality of stay in the area will be significantly improved.
The redesign covers an area of around 11,500 square meters, of which more than 6,000 square meters will be unsealed. There is plenty of space for new green spaces, including 13 new trees and enchanting islands of green, which will not only make the city more beautiful, but also help improve air quality. A water feature will also be installed to refresh residents and travelers on hot days. In order to further improve the quality of the stay, new seating areas are also being created - a real benefit for everyone who wants to take a break during their visit to the city.
An urban meeting place
The main goal of the project is to develop Maria-Restituta-Platz into an urban meeting place with a high quality of stay. This includes not only greening, but also improving the cycling infrastructure. The cycle path will be widened and straightened and around 200 new parking spaces will be created. This will make cycling in the city a lot more enjoyable!
Another important aspect of the modernization of the Wien Handelskai station is the extension of the platforms to 220 meters in order to accommodate longer and more powerful trains. This measure will help to significantly increase the capacity of Vienna's S-Bahn and improve connections to the surrounding area - for example Lower Austria.
Financing and sustainability
The financing of the project is largely provided by ÖBB-Infrastructure AG, with additional support from the city of Vienna and the district. The focus on sustainable design elements is particularly exciting: bright paving, drinking fountains for refreshment and pergolas with spray mist are just a few examples of the planned features that are intended to provide welcome cooling on hot summer days.
In recent years, scientists and experts have shown that green infrastructure is essential for urban life. This includes not only parks and playgrounds, but also intelligent solutions for stormwater management and promoting biodiversity in cities. The redesign of Maria-Restituta-Platz is not only a beautification, but also an important measure to promote a sustainable and livable city, as highlighted in the BfN reports.
It is expected that the new platforms will be operational by mid-December 2025. The comprehensive redesign of Maria-Restituta-Platz is expected to be completed by May 2026. For all Viennese and visitors to the city, this square will be a place where nature and urban quality of life combine harmoniously.
Curious about what's next? It will be exciting to see how the face of Vienna will change in the next few years!
