Parrots in need: Alsergrund sanctuary is desperately looking for new space!
The Alsergrund Parrot Conservation Center in Vienna is currently facing a serious challenge. How meinkreis.at reported, the center must vacate its current quarters in the former biocenter by the end of December 2023. The move was not originally planned until 2026 or 2027. But the site is to make way for a new university campus “Althangrund”.
Around 200 parrots and parakeets, many of them former protégés from poor husbandry or confiscated by customs, currently live in the 640 square meter glass house. The sanctuary, which has been offering a new home for the birds since 2022, has developed into a popular destination for animal lovers over the years. Guided tours, workshops, children's programs and festivals attract numerous visitors. But now ARGE Parrot Protection is under pressure to find a new, long-term home.
Urgent call for support
The necessary requirements for the new location are not without: A property with at least 500 square meters of interior space and 1,000 square meters of exterior space is required. In addition, the interior rooms should be heated and equipped with windows. To avoid noise controversies, no residents should live in the immediate vicinity. These requirements make the search for a suitable property particularly challenging, as many available properties are in need of renovation and financial resources are becoming increasingly scarce wienerkreisblatt.at determines.
In the meantime, the center is asking for help with the move as well as technical support. In addition, financial contributions from companies and visitors are urgently needed. In order to gain some hope in the tense situation, the association is organizing charity punch stands on three Advent weekends. The dates are November 28th and 30th as well as December 5th and 7th and December 12th and 14th, both from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Culinary offerings also await visitors.
Parrot adoption
If you can't keep a parrot yourself, you have the opportunity to give the animals a chance through temporary adoption. The placement takes place in accordance with the strict animal welfare guidelines of ARGE Parrot Protection. The birds are given away in at least pairs, and those interested in adopting them must complete a four-hour knowledge course. For further information about the submission and the requirements, please contact us using the form on the website parrotprotection.org describes.
The coming weeks are crucial for the sanctuary. The commitment and support of the Viennese is more in demand than ever so that the approximately 200 birds can continue to find a safe home in the future.
