Greens are calling for a change: climate-friendly boulevard for the city!

On November 18, 2025, a future-oriented topic will be hotly discussed in Josefstadt: the redesign of the surface of the two-way line between Karlsplatz and Alser Straße. The Greens have called for the relevant plan to be urgently disclosed in order to improve the current conditions. “The delays on the U2 and U5 subway lines are causing problems for all Viennese,” said district leader Martin Fabisch (Greens). Poor air quality, construction noise and constant diversions have characterized the Landesgerichtsstraße for years.

The Greens not only criticize the lack of concrete plans for the redesign, but also outlined a vision for a “climate-friendly boulevard” three years ago. This envisages that the area will no longer only be used for car traffic, but also for trees, wide cycle paths and attractive recreational areas. Studies show that there would be space for around 358 new trees and over 8,000 square meters of additional green space. Only a fifth of the area should be reserved for cars, while the remaining areas should be used for pedestrians, cyclists and greenery. Fabisch emphasizes that a redesign during the current construction work would not only be necessary, but also more cost-effective than later measures.

Involvement of the population

Another important point is raised by the deputy district leader, Josefa Molitor-Ruckenbauer (Greens): “We fear that only cosmetic measures will be implemented if the population is not included in the process at an early stage.” A dialogue with residents is necessary in order to incorporate their ideas and wishes into the planning process. Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ), on the other hand, refers to the subway construction that is already underway and the “General Project” from 2017. The focus here is on more green space and the creation of unsealed areas.

Future-oriented mobility

In connection with the redesign of Vienna's cityscape, the mobility transition is also considered crucial. This aims to promote alternative means of transport and increase the use of public transport. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport supports numerous projects to ensure innovative and sustainable urban and transport planning. This not only affects the design of the two-way line, but also the holistic development of the streets, which should be attractive for all road users. In addition, autonomous means of transport are intended to improve public transport offerings in rural areas.

The challenges of transport planning often represent an obstacle. Cities need precise local data in order to sustainably change mobility. Projects such as NaMIx and TwinCity3D are in use to collect necessary data and support planning. For example, an index is being developed that assesses the sustainability of mobility in neighborhoods based on factors such as bike-friendliness and accessibility to the city center.

The call from the Greens to city politics is clear: concrete plans are needed that both serve the quality of life of Viennese citizens and meet the requirements of a modern city. Future-oriented planning is now on the table; it remains to be seen how quickly politicians can set the course here.
