Increase in HIV cases: Enlightenment exhibition opened in the old AKH!
Alsergrund, Österreich - In Vienna, the numbers of new infections with HIV have increased alarming. In 2022, 454 new HIV cases were found in 19,977 tests, which is a clear increase compared to 2020 when only 332 new cases were recorded. This dramatic increase makes it clear that the age group between 18 and 50 years is particularly affected. Almost half of the new infections go back to sexual contacts between men, and many of the newly infected people have only experienced their illness long after infection. This increases the risk of infection significantly, as AIDS-Hilfe Vienna emphasizes.
But not just HIV is a problem. The number of sexually transmitted diseases (STI) as a whole also increases. According to the [KURIER] (https://kurier.at/chronik/wien/ Mehr-neu-hiv-infized- Exhibition-Thematized-Gegalsteien/403047292), syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, hepatitis and HIV have established themselves on the so-called "big five" in Europe. The MedUni Vienna identifies unprotected sexual intercourse as the main cause of these developments. In 2019, even 17 million cases were registered sexually transferable infections in Europe, a frightening number that underlines the urgency of prevention measures.
an alarming location
The expansion of information and information initiatives is urgently needed. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that around one million broadcasts of StIS take place every day in Europe. Whether it is bacterial, viral or parasitic infections - the risk of infecting yourself is real. Are particularly affected:
- Humane Papillom viruses (HPV) that can cause cervical cancer,
- syphilis, which can lead to serious illnesses,
- gonorrhea, whose number of cases almost quadrupled, and
- chlamydia, which according to estimates represent the most common STI in Germany.
What is even more alarming: Many of these infections are asymptomatic, which means that those affected unknowingly contribute to the contagion of others. Knowledge of the various sexually transmitted infections is often low. According to Statista, only about half of the adults know about HIV/, while Gonorrhea and syphilis are known in less than 30% of the population. In chlamydia, consciousness is even in shocking 10%.
Enlightenment is key
Against this background, the new exhibition in the Narrenturm of the old AKH is an important step. It is devoted to history and the current challenges of venereal diseases and is primarily intended to provide information. The focus is on prevention that provides better results than later treatment. Discrimination against people with STIS is also discussed, after all, an infection can affect everyone and should not go hand in hand with stigmatization.Behind the campaign there is also the findings of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which, among other things, analyzes epidemiological data on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. The ongoing studies and data evaluations are essential for the implementation of effective prevention strategies, diagnostics and therapy. The Statistics to spread and treat STIS clearly shows that there is a need for action.
Overall, it is clear: the clarification of sexually transmitted infections must be intensified. Here it is important to prove a good hand in order not only to reduce the number of new infections, but also to raise awareness among the population.
The future of sexual health in Vienna is at stake - and thus also the entire society.
