Neumarkt-St. Veit: After 40 years of dispute - Obermeier is withdrawing!
The weekly market in Neumarkt-St. Veit is facing a significant upheaval. Michaela Obermeier-Lohner, who has offered her fresh products on the market for almost 40 years, is withdrawing due to a lack of staff, age reasons and an escalating dispute over the location. The 59-year-old is now enjoying her partial retirement, as she announced to her loyal customers on a notice on June 5th. Your sales van will no longer be seen in the neighboring communities of Mühldorf, Altötting and Pfarrkirchen, which triggers a wave of melancholy for many. The reasons for their withdrawal are varied: Mainly, the city rejected the desired change of location to the central part of the city square, which, according to Obermeier-Lohner, significantly reduces customer frequency because the upper part is hardly visited.
The long-established dealer did not listen to Mayor Erwin Baumgartner in her argument. He replied that five alternative locations for the weekly market were considered, but the building and environmental committee decided against the relocation. In addition, the supply options in the community seem to be guaranteed even without the market. Obermeier-Lohner also cited the rejection of her daughter, Anna-Katharina, from the festival award as another reason for her decision. She expressed the suspicion that her application form had been passed on to another festival host, which Baumgartner vehemently rejects.
Folk festival in Neumarkt-St. Veit – 2025 full of fun
While tempers around the weekly market have to calm down, Neumarkt-St. Veit is looking forward to the upcoming folk festival from June 6th to 15th, 2025. Visitors can expect a colorful program full of entertainment, culinary delights and rides. Mayor Baumgartner emphasizes the family-friendliness of the festival and will officially open the event with a beer tapping. The festival site at Johannesstrasse 20 will be transformed into a celebration mile.
The Zens family's marquee will be the central location of the event, where festival beer and wheat beer from the local Aldersbach brewery can be enjoyed - a beer here costs 10.40 euros. With a range of themed and action days, such as “Seniors’ Day” and a sheepshead tournament, there is something for everyone. Particularly noteworthy are the children's afternoons, where clowns and a children's parade await the little visitors.
Tradition and community
Folk festivals are a long tradition in Germany, with around 9,900 celebrations attracting around 148 million visitors every year. This tradition is also in Neumarkt-St. Veit is alive, and the anticipation for the folk festival is enormous. The mayor hopes that the event will be accident-free and that all visitors will have lots of fun. The Zens family has also been hired as festival hosts for the coming years 2026 to 2028, which speaks for continuity and quality.
Although Obermeier-Lohner's withdrawal represents a deep break in the market tradition, the hope remains that Neumarkt-St. Veit remains alive and offers attractive events for its citizens. The preparations for the folk festival are a sign that community life remains strong and that people come together to celebrate despite challenges.
