Vienna is on the move: Theological courses are booming to Corona!

St. Johann bei Herberstein, Österreich - Adult education in Vienna is experiencing an upswing that cannot be overlooked. The Vienna adult education facility "Theological Courses" is pleased with increasing number of participants and a growing interest in religious and theological topics. Head Erhard Lesacher reveals that around 6,500 participants were counted in a total of 550 courses and lectures in 2024. A remarkable increase, which he attributes primarily to the time after the Corona pandemic, in which many people
looking for the foundation and a deeper understanding of questions of faith.

The focus is particularly on the "course theology", which produced around 100 graduates last year after it was around 90 in the previous year. The location for the distance from the theological course has also changed: from now on it will take place in the "House of Women" in St. Johann near Herberstein. Here, the participants can expect a comprehensive course over four semesters - or five in the long -distance course - to promote a profound examination of the Christian faith.

Innovative online offers

In the course of digitization, the facility has expanded its range of courses. There is now also a new online rail that is accessible across Austria for those who cannot come personally. In addition to synchronous courses that are offered live, asynchronous courses are now also available that enable the participants to learn regardless of time and location. These new formats, such as "Basic Info Christianity" and "Believe with heart & brain", aim to create easy access to theological content.

  • basic info Christianity: 2 modules with 4 lessons and 2 online meetings. Ideal for non-and different beliefs.
  • believe with heart & brain: 8 modules with three asynchronous units and an online meeting, suitable for religiously interested and skeptics.

The entire course program can be easily viewed on the theological courses website. Registration for the online courses is also possible, the next round with the start of the course in the autumn semester 2025/26 starting from September 01. If you want to get in in spring 2026, you can do so from February 02

insight into the course content

from dogmatic foundations to biblical hermeneutics to pastoral care and psychology - the diversity of topics in the courses is great and addresses a wide variety of interests. For example, participants can prove courses in Greek, Hebrew or to communicate the gospel. This not only opens up the opportunity to deepen their own knowledge and gain new perspectives not only to the believing, but also all interested parties.

The public lecture program of the "Academy am Dom" will open on October 22nd with a lecture by P. Andreas Batlogg and culminates with another lecture by Claudia Paganini on November 12th. The lectures not only invite you to listen, but also offer lively discussions that promote dealing with questions of faith.

In summary, it can be said that the “theological courses” are not only very popular with the participants, but also offer a modern approach to the imparting of theological content. The facility seems to have a good hand to combine contemporary education with spiritual arguments and thus make a valuable contribution to religious education in Vienna.
