Vienna holds new elections: Ludwig remains mayor, Gaál again as vice!

On June 10, 2025, the SPÖ in Vienna set the course for the coming years. When nominating Michael Ludwig for re-election as mayor, the comrades impressively showed that they are committed to continuity. Ludwig received 69 out of 100 valid votes in the vote and accepted the election with the vow “I vow”. Kathrin Gaál will act at his side as deputy mayor, who was also elected with 70 votes and will campaign for the concerns of housing, housing construction and women. Vienna.gv.at reports that the NEOS also have Bettina Emmerling, a second person in the deputy mayor's office, who received 53 votes and has already confirmed her acceptance into office.

With the new constellation in the town hall, the business group division in the municipality has also been revised. From now on, various departments have been clearly distributed in order to be able to efficiently meet the city's specific challenges. The innovations, which are valid from today, are the result of comprehensive coalition negotiations and a clear commitment to the necessary cooperation within the city government.

New responsibilities and division of departments

A look at the new business groups shows that the city government has handed over the topics of education, integration and markets to NEOS. Bettina Emmerling will therefore be responsible for education and integration policy. The tasks are supported by the respective departments of the municipal authorities, including MA 10 (kindergartens) and MA 11 (child and youth welfare).

The SPÖ has also made changes within its ranks: Barbara Novak is taking over the department for finance, economics, labor, international and digital affairs. Her predecessor Peter Hanke is moving to the federal government. This department is not only responsible for economic matters, but also plays a central role in the digitalization of the city.

Responsibility for urban development and mobility continues to lie with Ulli Sima, who will also be responsible for Wiener Stadtwerke. Questions relating to urban planning as well as flood protection and traffic coordination are addressed here. courier has informed that markets will no longer be part of her department.

Focus on climate and society

Another important area is the department of Jürgen Czernohorszky, who is responsible for climate policy, environmental policy and human resources matters. Under his leadership, the focus will be on the Vienna baths, which will now be integrated into his department. In the social area, Peter Hacker remains responsible for health and sport, which is important for the city's health care and social services.

What is also interesting is the high proportion of women in the city senate, which is now 66.7%. This shows that the city government not only values equality, but also takes the different perspectives within the government seriously. Mayor Ludwig emphasizes the importance of cooperation and plans that the club chairmanship will also be decided in the club general meeting, although he would like Josef Taucher to continue as club chairman.

With all these changes, Vienna shows that it is ready to proactively address the challenges of the future. The new team has positioned itself clearly and relies on cooperation and commitment to a city worth living in. The coming months will show how these projects are actually implemented.
