Safety in road traffic: Exploded e-scooter accidents in Vienna!
in Vienna is currently on two wheels-on e-scooters to be precise. The city has an alarming increase in accidents with these popular electrical treads. In order to increase the safety in road traffic, the city has launched a comprehensive campaign under the motto "Vienna rolls safely". E-scooter drivers are to be better sensitized in three pillars and, above all, referred to frequent violations that drive up the number of accidents.
The first pillar of the campaign focuses on prevention work. It is about clarification about numerous violations that E-Scooter drivers commit to road traffic. This includes the provisional use of walking stands, driving against integration or disregard for light signs. Also driving several people on a scooter is not allowed and endangers security.
repression and education
The second pillar includes repression measures. E-scooter drivers are now treated as car drivers, especially when it comes to alcohol impairment. The punishments can be between 800 and 5,900 euros and strive to check traffic reliability and, in the event of repeated violations, to withdraw the driver's license. A priority campaign in March has shown that four e-scooter drivers who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs were already pulled out of circulation. This afternoon, over 300 ads in connection with e-scooters were recorded.
The third pillar of the campaign relies on the sensitization of parents and other road users. For this purpose, two information folder are distributed who explain the safe use of e-scooters and pursue the objective to minimize the risk for all road users.
new regulations from 2025
The Situation around e-scooters is not only tackled by the city of Vienna, but also at the national level the electrical cleaning vehicle regulation (EKFV) is revised. These legal changes are intended to help increase traffic safety and to better integrate e-scooters into road traffic. From April 2025, e-scooters are allowed to drive on bike paths, while they are only allowed to be traveling in pedestrian zones and on sidewalks at walking speed.
One of the greatest innovations is permission to turn red light under certain conditions such as cyclists. In addition, newly approved e-scooters must be equipped with indicators and a separate front and back brake. The regulations aim to make the use of e-scooters clearer and safer.
fines and editions
The fines for violations, such as the unauthorized driving of sidewalks or taking several people with you, are also increased. For example, unauthorized driving can cost up to 55 euros on sidewalks. The minimum age for use remains 14 years, and the helmet obligation is still only a recommendation, but every driver must have liability insurance.
Alcohol boundaries for e-scooter drivers correspond to those of drivers. At over 0.5 to 1.09 per thousand there is a fine of around 500 euros and a driving ban, while from 1.1 per thousand there is a criminal offense. For drivers under the age of 21, the 0.0 Promille limit applies.
The upcoming regulations have the potential to significantly improve the security situation for e-scooter users in Vienna, because the number of accidents with serious personal injury is a serious problem that can no longer be ignored. It remains to be hoped that the combination of sensitization, clear regulations and consistent punishments will soon lead to a noticeable improvement in traffic safety.
