Students brew beer: success story at the Pyhra technical school!

A new chapter in beer production has opened at the Pyhra Agricultural College (LFS). A modern brewing facility, which was built in cooperation with the St. Pölten brewing cooperative “Spitzenbier”, offers students the opportunity to learn the craft of brewing beer. After the ceremonial blessing of the brewery by Abbot Patrick Schöder from Göttweig Abbey, the facility was officially opened. State Councilor for Education Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister was also there and acknowledged the importance of this unique cooperation between education and business.

The brewing system is not only a technical highlight, but also a crucial step in the four-year training of future specialists. In the future, the training branch “Agriculture with Food Technology” will impart practical knowledge about the professional production of beverages. The students have the opportunity to brew beer as part of their training - a total of around 100,000 liters are planned per year, which will be sold in the school's farm shop.

A comprehensive training concept

The training offering at LFS Pyhra is diverse. The specialty includes not only brewing beer, but also the processing and treatment of food. With the new brewing system, students can learn how to use modern brewing techniques, refrigeration technology and steam cleaning technology. Director Josef Sieder emphasizes that these technical skills are essential for training and optimally prepare students for the requirements of the beverage industry.

There are now over 1,000 different types of beer and around 350 breweries in Austria, with the number of small breweries increasing to around 130 in recent years. This development shows that craft beers are very popular and the demand for well-trained specialists in the industry is constantly growing. LFS Pyhra graduates are in high demand in the beverage industry and can pursue a wide variety of career paths, be it in large breweries or small craft breweries.

Prospects after training

Training to become a beer brewer usually lasts three years and combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Not only is knowledge of the ingredients such as malt and hops important, but also skills in operational hygiene and quality control. Anyone who wants to pursue a career in the brewery later has numerous options: from master brewer to quality controller to teacher. With increasing professional experience, the salary can also become impressive - anything from 2,000 to over 4,000 euros gross per month is possible.

This creative and practical training at the Pyhra technical school is more than just a learning place - it is a springboard into the world of beer production and a contribution to the sustainable development of the Austrian beverage industry. So anyone who wants to try it out for themselves can rejoice: in a country where beer tradition and new trends go hand in hand, the future for young master brewers is secured.
