Meiselstraße shines: new climate-friendly bicycle street opens!

Vienna is once again taking a step towards climate-friendly mobility: The second section of the new cycle connection from the Neubau belt towards the west is now accessible. Meiselstraße was recently extensively redesigned and is now presented as a climate-friendly bicycle street. It runs parallel to the busy Hütteldorfer Straße and is part of the effort to make Vienna a more bike-friendly city that is equipped to face the challenges of climate change. This reports 5min.at.

Meiselstraße stretches over 900 meters and was converted into a bicycle street from Johnstraße to Drechslergasse. The numerous improvements for pedestrians are also new: visibility has been optimized at intersections by extending the sidewalk. The planting of 17 new trees along the route and the creation of over 900 m² of new green spaces will provide more fresh air. This contributes to climate resilience and the quality of life in the districts.

Wheel connection details

The first section of this cycle connection, which extends along Hütteldorfer Straße, was completed at the end of 2024 and is 1.6 km long. The cycle path on Hütteldorfer Straße is comfortable at 3.5 m wide and is also structurally separated from flow of traffic. Over 4,000 m² of this route was unsealed, which counteracts the urban heat island issue. The cycling facilities are also newly accentuated: a new two-way cycle path extends from Drechslergasse to Leyserstrasse.

It is particularly worth mentioning that as part of these measures, the school forecourt in Lortzinggasse was also greened and redesigned to be climate-friendly. In order to increase the safety of children, access for cars between Beckmanngasse and Hustergasse was prevented.

Green spaces for everyone

The redesign of Meiselstrasse is not only an enrichment for cycling. Over the next few years, Ludwig Zatzka Park will also be redesigned and will receive new green spaces, lounge options and sports equipment. Further changes are planned for this from 2026. The overall picture is rounded off by the planting of another 40 trees along Hütteldorfer Straße.

With these extensive measures, Vienna is once again showing how important the creation of environmentally friendly transport infrastructure is for a sustainable urban future. The fact is that mobility in the city needs to be rethought - and Meiselstrasse gives the city the opportunity to set an example and sustainably improve the lives of all citizens.
