Ottakring becomes green: Remodeling the hippviertel is now starting!

In the heart of Ottakring, the project to redesign the hippviertel is an important chapter for climate protection. The measures should not only raise the quality of life of the residents: lifting inside, but also sustainably improve the urban climate. Today, on June 11, 2025, the official starting signal for this ambitious redesign campaign, which provides for a proud 1,300 m², was created, creating space for urgently needed green areas. 5min.at

With the redesign, a total of 27 new trees are planted and new green areas are created that extend over 500 m². The focus is on several streets in the district: a pedestrian zone is being built on Brunnengasse, which comes up with seating, a water feature and three drinking fountains. The Menzelgasse is shaded with five new trees, while Hippgasse is upgraded with a total of 13 new trees, benches and chess and millet. Thanks to the colorful soil painting, you will not only be able to sit well here, but also enjoy a touch of creativity. 5min.at

commitment to the climate

The redesign of the Hippviertel is in line with the broader commitment of the city of Vienna, which has already implemented 344 measures in 23 districts since 2021 as part of "Raus out of the asphalt" projects. This also includes numerous projects for greening and creating sustainable common rooms. Klimateam.gv.at The balance of the past five years is impressive: over 85,000 m² New greening, new trees and 2,745 new seating brings a breath of fresh air to the city.

In Ottakring, other exciting projects are also being planned, which the district should not only make more environmentally friendly, but also more livable. A future perspective is being developed via Friedrich-Kaiser-Gasse, and the main square is to become a central place of the good climate. You not only remain limited to the large areas: Urban Gardening is becoming increasingly important, so that small areas such as balconies and courtyards can also be used for the cultivation of vegetables and herbs.

quality of life in focus

If the picture will change in the streets of the Hippviertel soon, the residents can look forward to a greener and more inviting environment. The new greening and the numerous additional seating helps to create a real "green oasis" in the middle of the city. This is not only for people, but also for the wildlife, because the new areas promote the growth of plants and thus also strengthen biodiversity in Vienna.

With such projects, Vienna again shows that it has a feel for sustainability and is working seriously on a livable urban future. The Hippviertel will not only be a chic place to linger, but also a prime example of lively climate protection and sustainable urban development.
