FPÖ Ottakring: Pigeon plague under control - application for controlled pigeon lofts!
Things are simmering in Vienna-Ottakring: The FPÖ sees a need for action in the area's pigeon population and has therefore submitted a proposal for improved pigeon control. District party chairman Michael Oberlechner explains that more and more residents are complaining about the legacies of feathered city residents. The main concern: regulating the pigeon population. However, the FPÖ remains in tune with the times and has decided to do this without harming the animals. As meinkreis.at reports, pollution of public areas is a serious problem, be it on sidewalks, balconies or even on facades and window sills.
In discussions about possible solutions, the FPÖ conceived the idea of a dovecote, similar to the existing pilot project at Vienna Central Station. Here the pigeons should be controlled through targeted feeding and the exchange of eggs with dummies in order to reduce the population. The city of Vienna supports this plan through its MA 49 (forestry and agriculture), which also advocates a dovecote as a controlled place of residence.
The path to the dovecote
The idea of a dovecote should not only offer an environmentally friendly solution, but also ensure that the pigeons have species-appropriate conditions. Christian Kreutzer from Wildvogelhilfe emphasizes that pigeons in cities often have accommodation problems, which is why offering a dovecote is a sensible step. By redirecting pigeons away from high-traffic areas, public spaces could become cleaner again and improve the quality of life for residents. In addition, the application will be discussed at the district council meeting on February 27th and assigned to the environmental committee for discussion.
Oberlechner is optimistic that the motion will be approved at the next meeting in June. “There is something to be said,” he says, adding that it must then be checked whether and where a supervised pigeon loft can actually be implemented in Ottakring.
A look beyond the city limits
It's not just Ottakring that is struggling with the pigeon problem. wildvogelhilfe.org shows that many cities have similar challenges. Local residents are often affected and creative solutions are needed to meet the needs of people and animals.
It remains exciting to see how the situation in Ottakring will develop. The next meeting of the district council will show whether the idea of a dovecote can become a reality and whether the pigeon population in the area can be brought under control.
