Meidling 2026: Green projects and innovations for our neighborhood!

There are several exciting projects on the agenda in Meidling in 2026 that will not only change the cityscape, but also significantly improve the quality of life of residents. District leader Wilfried Zankl from the SPÖ gave a comprehensive overview of the planned measures that will become reality from next year.

A highlight will be the redesign of Christine Busta Park, which will begin in autumn 2026, after summer 2026. Between April and June 2025, around 300 citizens were able to contribute their ideas - in discussions, a hands-on day and via digital channels. The urban renewal area management has collected these suggestions and the feedback will be incorporated into the final planning, which is expected for spring 2026. The redesigned park is scheduled to open in summer 2027. Popular requests from the population include more play equipment, climbing elements and shaded areas. The preservation of the old trees and additional water features are also targeted. In order to evaluate the feedback from residents, two presentation dates were offered in October 2025, during which the first designs were presented, which could be presented in an exhibition in the park.

Variety of projects for 2026

The redesign of Miep-Gies Park will be another “project under our fingernails”. Here, residents can expect the introduction of a climate team and the construction of a climate education corridor, which are intended to enable a more environmentally friendly and educational design of the park. The specific implementation plans have already been set out in the 2026 district budget.

The aim is to set accents on Meidlinger Hauptstrasse with a series of greening measures. This includes greening the tree sections, removing gravel areas and installing irrigation pipes for permanent planting. Sensors are used in Bonygasse to monitor the condition of the trees and enable targeted irrigation.

School renovations and improvements in public transport

But it's not just the green area that is being tackled! Extensive renovations are also planned in two kindergartens on Ruckergasse and Haebergasse. Furthermore, the safety lighting at schools on Johann-Hoffmann-Platz will be updated and intercom systems will be retrofitted so that everyone can feel safe and comfortable.

In the area of public transport, a new bus route will be introduced on Benyastrasse from 2027. In addition, there is the construction of a bus turnaround, which is intended to further improve the local transport offering in Meidling. Pedestrians can look forward to a new crossing with a traffic island in Schönbrunner Allee, which is intended to increase safety when crossing the street.

Things will also be exciting in the cultural sector. The tried and tested studio and gallery tour is being held for the fourth time this year, and for the first time there is a literature focus with free readings that are intended to attract even more people to the events.

Survey for a citizen-oriented future

The colorful program is rounded off by a large Meidling survey that takes a look at citizens' satisfaction with traffic, green space, living environment and infrastructure. The results are intended to define important priorities for the coming years and give residents the feeling that their voices are being heard.

Overall, the outlook for 2026 is more than promising and shows that local decision-makers have a good handle on the needs of the population. The coming months promise an exciting time of changes and improvements for everyone in Meidling.
