Experience the Lost Places of Buxtehude – Virtual Tour on December 14th!

Something is happening in Buxtehude! On December 14, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. the Buxtehude Local History and History Association invites you. V. together with the Kulturforum Buxtehude for the event “Lost Places 2.0”. This interesting event is part of the “Este Lifeline” series and offers a virtual tour of the historic old town.

After the great success of last year's exhibition "Buxtehude At that time", the creators Reiner Sprenger (Le Sprenger) and Bernd Untermöhlen are once again taking visitors on a journey through time. This time the focus is on the town hall district before the devastating fires of 1911. The highlight of the tour are the newly reconstructed views of the rear buildings on Ostfleth around 1900 as well as unpublished material that brings the history of Buxtehude to life.

A look into history

Did you know that Buxtehude also has an important musical history? Diderich Buxtehude, often called Dieterich Buxtehude, was born in 1637 and is considered one of the most important musicians of the 17th century. His parents were Johannes Buxtehude and Helle Jespersdatter, and his father was an organist in Helsingør and Helsingborg. When he took over the position of organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck in 1668, he married Franz Tunder's daughter Anna Margarethe and had seven daughters with her, which only strengthened the family connection to music.

Buxtehude's influence on music was enormous: he organized the Abendmusik, a series of musical performances, and composed over 100 vocal works, although these were only published in a few important manuscripts. His 19 organ preludes, which are considered important contributions to music literature, deserve special attention. His works have become known primarily through chorale arrangements, which have a high status in the North German musical tradition.
