Mariahilf district school brilliantly renovated after millions invested!
A festive day for the Mariahilf district school: On November 13, 2025, the newly renovated and expanded school was inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony. The renovation work, which was carried out over a period of three years, included the Mittelgasse elementary school as well as the middle school and the general special school in Spalowskygasse. The city of Vienna invested around 30 million euros to create modern and inviting learning spaces.
In short, the newly created facilities are impressive: four educational rooms, group and leisure rooms, a gymnastics room, a library as well as an enlarged dining room and newly designed cloakroom areas offer the students optimal conditions for their educational path. The multifunctional zones in the existing building promote exchange between classes and offer retreat spaces that support learning.
Green and sustainable
The redesign of the outdoor facilities is particularly impressive. Unsealed areas and a green area on Wallgasse ensure a pleasant learning environment. A newly created roof terrace not only serves as an open-air classroom, but also as a place for the students to stay. The redesign also benefits the environment: the building is operated gas-free and uses a combination of heat pump and photovoltaic system, which ensures a sustainable energy supply.
Another important aspect of the renovation was improving fire protection and accessibility. Students now receive a safe and accessible environment that meets all needs. This comprehensive project was implemented as part of the School Renovation Package II, which has been promoting the modernization of schools in Vienna since 2018 and thus makes a major contribution to improving the educational infrastructure.
Pedagogical innovations
But it wasn't just the structural aspects of the school that were modernized. At a time when digital education is becoming increasingly important, it is also important to further develop pedagogical approaches. Interaction with modern technologies, such as companion robots, can play an exciting role. Studies have shown that these technologies, such as the Paro robot, can have positive effects on the well-being of older people in care facilities. What is particularly interesting is that similar approaches are also being discussed in schools to make learning more interactive and engaging for students PubMed reports that....
The Mariahilf district school is therefore not only a place of education, but also a model example of future-oriented school development. With these extensive renovation measures, Vienna is ensuring that educational institutions can continue to exist in the 21st century - both in the physical and digital sense.
